Vancouver Is Awesome, and we are dedicated to everything that makes it that way.

If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

V.I.A. needs your help to help sick kids

May 20, 2013

BC Children’s Hospital Miracle Weekend (June 1 and 2) is a celebration of hope, courage and remarkable people – or Superheroes – who are making a difference for BC Children’s Hospital.

The two kids pictured below (Arlo and Sadie) are our Superheroes. They belong to two different families that contribute to V.I.A. (the Kronbauers and the Overgaauws) and they’re both regular fixtures on our web site and in our magazine. In their few short years on this earth they’ve both been in to BC Children’s Hospital multiple times for relatively minor procedures, as well as ER visits. Both families have had nothing but fabulous experiences at BC Children’s and they count themselves lucky that the kids are healthy and haven’t had to undergo major treatment that so many with serious illnesses do.

We at Vancouver Is Awesome have joined forces with the Miracle Makers to raise money to provide the best possible care to children across the province. Please join Arlo, Sadie and the rest of us in making a difference. Visit miraclemaker.ca/vancouverisawesome for our team page, to learn more, and to make a donation to help the kids. And look for us on TV on Miracle Weekend when we’ll be presenting BC Children’s Hospital with the money we’ve raised!

The Playground: Playland Opens this Weekend!

May 3, 2013
Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Looking for something to do this sunny weekend?  Playland opens tomorrow, May 4th for the 2013 season (weekends only from 10am – 6pm).  A day at Playland can be a pretty affordable family outing.  Toddlers are free and parents can purchase a “guardian pass” (limit two per child under 12) for $18.50.  More info on admissions can be found here.

Our favourites include trying to spot our house from the top of the Ferris Wheel, the glittery motorcycles  and the happiest helicopters in town.   Check out a full list of kid friendly rides here along with height restrictions. There are also two new family rides this year:  Teacups and Balloon Explorers! I know Sadie will be eager to try those.   One ride that she is less eager to revisit is the Kettle  Creek Roller Coaster:

The Playground: Animal Farm

April 26, 2013
Welcome to The Playground, a place for Vancouver families. I’m always on the lookout for fun stuff to do, so if there’s something happening that you think I should know about, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Rather than playing with toy animals or looking at pictures in books, visiting a farm is a great chance for children see and interact with the real thing.  It was on a recent trip to Maplewood Farm in North Vancouver that I realized how much I underestimated how much a child learns about animals’ behaviour  by watching goats butt heads, feeding carrots to rabbits and learning how to milk a cow.  There are plenty of places in the Lower Mainland that give families the opportunity to interact, learn or simply enjoy farm animals.   Lots of these places are family owned working farms with people eager to share everything they know about animals and farms.

Support @BCJeansDay 2013

April 24, 2013

Tomorrow is Jeans Day in BC! What this means is that people all across the province show their support for BC Children’s Hospital Foundation by wearing their jeans as well as a pin or a button that they bought (for $5 or $20, respectively), with proceeds going back to the Foundation.

Last year I made THIS POST sharing a photo of my then-3-year-old son, Arlo, in support of Jeans Day. He’s now 4, he still loves cookies, and he’s still a kid who has visited this hospital as a patient and has directly benefited from generous people like you who have helped them out. Visit one of THESE retailers and get your button or pin in support!

Find Jeans Day on Facebook at fb.com/jeansday and Twitter at @BCJeansDay, AND find them at the Vancouver Art Gallery on Thursday where they’re holding a BBQ (DETAILS HERE) from 11:30AM-1:30PM!

Arlo’s photo was, of course, inspired by the Vancouver Canucks’ Sedin twins and their ongoing support of the hospital and specifically of Jeans Day. These former Vancouver Canucks captains below – Trevor Linden, Stan Smyl and Orland Kurtenbach – and their photo for Jeans Day 2013 brought inspiration as well!
