Vancouver Is Awesome, and we are dedicated to everything that makes it that way.

If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

Listen to the EP from new local band, Galiano

May 22, 2013

This past winter, Vancouver musicians Brent Freedman and Rolla Olak posted up in a cabin at my favourite Gulf Island resort, Bodega Ridge, and proceeded to record a series of songs under the band name Galiano. What resulted is a wonderfully folky and upbeat EP, which we were recently treated to a live performance of at a launch party at… wait for it… Bodega Ridge!

Listen to the EP below and if you enjoy it maybe pay for a download?

Super, Neighbours in BC: Feast Tofino 2013 – Part Five: What To Do!

May 22, 2013
Welcome to the latest series of Super, Neighbours blog posts where we highlight incredible travel destinations in British Columbia!

Feast Tofino is back for it’s third year and it’s better and longer than ever. Stretching throughout May, it features “Stay and Dine” packages as well as $29, $39 and $49 “Dine About” set price menus, special events, and celebrates “the abundance of seasonal produce, seafood and sustainable “boat-to-table” practices commonly adopted by the area’s restaurants” and the Tofino-Ucluelet Culinary Guild.

In this 5 part series I’m going to show you everything from the ease of travelling to Tofino, to the amazing food you can eat, activities you can try, places you can stay and people you can meet.

If you missed it, here’s Part One: Getting There!, Part Two: Where to Stay!, Part Three: Feast!, Part Four: TUCG and presenting:
Part Five: What To Do!

Finally after 4 other posts (links above) I’m going to show you some of the awesome things you can do while in Tofino (you know, if you leave your amazing hotel/aren’t feasting every second of the day)…

The Tofino Brewing Company was actually my very first stop…my cabin wasn’t ready yet, so of course I went to get some supplies (and beer to bring back home to Vancouver…which I may or may not be drinking while I’m typing this).

Amazing people behind the counter and samples/growler fills/bottles for sale…what more could you ask for? It was a great way to start the trip!

—
The day that I arrived the town was actually having a little street festival (you know, because they paved the street!)… Who was I to argue with checking out the bouncy castle, cotton candy, live music, and roller derby girls demonstration!

Saturday morning I woke up to find out I’d be setting out on what turned out to be quite the adventure…whale watching with local company Jamie’s. It was a blustery day and my face below illustrates what I looked like when it rained sideways on my face, but …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Friday you have some tough choices: The Archers, Jasper Sloan Yip, and The Ruffled Feathers at the Media Club…and No Sinner is over at the Electric Owl w/ Three Wolf Moon, and Indian Wars. Saturday you should venture to Uptown Live! – a free festival in New West ft MANY VIAindie favs like The Belle Game, Bend Sinister, Good For Grapes and more! START YOUR WEEK RIGHT WITH THE V.I.A. WEEKLY PLAYLIST
WEEK 172: The Shilohs

May 20, 2013
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. With over 28,000+ artists, boasting more than 140,000+ tracks, the CBC Music/CBC Radio 3 web site is the absolute ultimate authority, and the home, of independent music in Canada. With that massive library along with tools for members (free to join!), we’re taking advantage of what they’ve set up by bringing you a fresh batch of music every week featuring local groups who have tracks (entire albums, even!) on the R3 site.

Record Club is back at the Biltmore TONIGHT and this week they have Vancouver band The Shilohs performing (with guest DJs Evan McDowell and Daniel Presnell (Von Bingen)). In the meantime we asked the boys to put together a list of some of their fav Vancouver tunes. I LOVE when I get playlists back and hear songs by bands I’ve never heard of…and there are some gems in this one. Click the images below to hear the list and we’ll see you tonight at the Biltmore!:

May 14, 2013
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the best concerts happening around the city…

We’re Three Years Old Today! Yay VIAindie…that’s a lot of photos. I’d like to thank the Vancouver Music scene and all of the photographers that have contributed their skills over the last 3 years!

We had a great party last week (I’ll include a photo of the cake!) and then I took off for Tofino, but the wonderful Ben Caldwell (check out HIS band Broken Down Suitcase) took some shots at the tribute to The Smiths at the Biltmore! Thanks buddy!

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: the Khatsahlano (free) launch party at Zulu Records is on Wednesday with Village, and Gal Gracen. Thursday check out Rococode, with Tough Lovers, and Colourful Language at the Media Club. Friday Small Town Artillery & JP Maurice are at the Backstage Lounge, while Bill Baird is at the Cobalt with V.Vecker Ensemble, and Dissonant Disco. Saturday Sad Mag is having what looks to be like an amazing party with bands covering 80′s, new wave, and electro-pop songs! Finally on Monday, be sure to check out The Shilohs performing at the Biltmore.
