GIANTS II: Pump Trolley

November 21, 2011

Shining the theatre light on the best of Vancouver’s comedic underground.

On November 26th, GIANTS Comedy and The Cultch are proud to present the second of six instalments of this first-of-its-kind project uniting the best of Vancouver’s comedy scene with the ambition and professionalism of the local theatre community. After a sold out premiere, GIANTS’ sophomore show features a mix of sketch, and stand-up culminating Vancouver’s first comedic rap battle where a dozen of our funniest comedians will twist rap battles with pro wrestling type characters to make one MASSIVELY entertaining experience that we at Vancouver is Awesome are proud to be media sponsors of.

GIANTS is more than just a live show, it is a collaboration between some of Vancouver’s best comedic talents.  The latest video offering created by Weekend Leisure, features sketch darlings Pump Trolley:

Forget head writers.  Pump Trolley Comedy‘s eight person writer-performer team creates each and every sketch together, honing and funny-packing each piece as a group over a six week process that culminates in an all-new revue every two months at their home the China Cloud Theatre.

If you’ve ever seen Pump Trolley you’ll recognize their absurdist humour mixed with an interest in creating tight, refined live sketch.  The group is a Vancouver comedy staple but has most recently hosted and headlined the sketch showcases at Music Waste and the Olio Festival, as well as being featured on Paul Anthony’s Talent Time.

The November 26th GIANTS show also includes some of the golden boys and girls of the scene, many of whom have never shared the stage. Guests include: Rap Battle MC Taz VanRassel (The Sunday Service, Vancouver Theatresports), Ben McGinnis (CTV, Comedy Now), Morgan Brayton (Raccoonery/Pick of the Fringe), Alicia Tobin (City TV’s The List), as well as a slew of surprise Vancouver celebrity comedians battling one another in rhyming hip-hop parody.

GIANTS II is not to be missed.

Location: The Vancity Culture Lab 1895 Venables Street

Tickets: $10 Available at the door or in advance at www.giantscomedy.com

PEAK Performance Project Bootcamp

August 30, 2011

Leigh here, with an update from the PEAK Performance Project Bootcamp (Christine McAvoy would have done this but she’s busy shooting and editing super rad photos of everything we’re doing, so she asked me to jump in and post an update). We’ve been here for 5 spectacular days, and I know the artists must be learning an amazing amount because I am, and I’m here as Music BC staff.

Interested to see what we’ve been up to? Christine has posted photos from every day on Facebook. Click through the photos to see more!

Stay tuned to the PEAK Performance Project Facebook and Twitter pages for more updates as they happen!

Scene and Heard: Last Week In Music Vol. 55 – Sasquatch 2011 and Music Waste (ft. Kingdom Cloud, Oh No! Yoko, Sun Wizard)

June 7, 2011
sceneandheard SCENE AND HEARD showcases the independent music scene here in Vancouver. We interview some of our favourite local artists, post weekly guest playlists comprised of Vancouver artists and ‘Last Week in Music’ highlights some of the concerts happening around the city…

What a crazy few weekends! I’ve finally sorted through 1200+ Sasquatch photos and another hundred more from Music Waste, slept for a day, watched some hockey and here I am! Sasquatch was once again an awesome time…there’s nothing like spending a few days getting dirty, listening to music in a beautiful place. THEN to come home and have a festival in town? Perfect.

Now, the insanity that was Sasquatch had me running from stage to stage as much as I could…I saw shows by Death From Above 1979, Dan Mangan, Tokyo Police Club, Das Racist, Sam Roberts, City and Colour, The Flaming Lips and more…not to mention some awesome comedy in the comedy tent.
And what is the best news for you? NPR was there recording the shows. You can pick and choose whom you’d like to hear BY CLICKING HERE. (I missed Black Mountain during the Peak Top 20 announcement, but luckily could listen to them through that page too!).

The day I got back I was invited to check out the Noah & The Whale/Bahamas show at the Biltmore, unfortunately the staff wouldn’t let my camera equipment in/no photos were allowed, but I did enjoy the show. Bahamas was great as always, and if you want to hear a what Noah & The Whale sound like, check out their NPR-Sasquatch Recording!

Lastly Music Waste was happening this past weekend (yes, there were things going on during hockey!) I managed to make it to three shows on Saturday night (barely!), checking out VIAindie favourites Kingdom Cloud, Oh No! Yoko, and Sun Wizard. Thanks again to Music Waste!

THIS WEEK IN MUSIC: is fairly quiet (probably due to, you know, the Canucks being in the Stanley Cup Finals) until the end of the week. Friday sees MANY shows happening after Game 5 including: The British Columbians/Vancougar/Carmen Townsend at The Cobalt - The Enemy Feathers/The Oh Wells/Rat Silo at Lanalou’s -and Himalayan Bear/Prairie Cat/Chris-a-Riffic at the Interurban Gallery. Saturday is this week’s playlist creator The Provincial Archive playing the QUICKNESS CD release party at the Railway, and Matthew Barber w/ Oh Susanna at the Biltmore for an early show. No idea what I will be able to make it out to this week (I might even be here, here OR here!), but get out there and see some live music!

PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VOTE FOR VIA in the BLOG section of the UCC&Awards – Lifestyle, Sports, Events and…MUSIC! (you can only vote once, and don’t have to sign up, so it’s super easy.)
(FYI, I’m also in the ARTS>PHOTOGRAPHER section) xo!
