Fitness Friday: @BarreFitness Challenge Week Eleven

May 24, 2013
IT’S FITNESS FRIDAY!
For the next 3 months I’m blogging about my adventure to complete the 36 classes in 90 challenge put on by and in partnership with Barre Fitness!Hopefully you’ll join me and be motivated to get fit! I’ll be sharing recipes, exercises, class and workshop ideas, and more. And *BONUS* if when I complete the challenge and go to 36 classes, I get to give away TWO 2-Week Trial passes to Barre Fitness to some lucky VIA readers!
So encourage me on twitter follow the challenge hashtag: #BBFC and I’ll see you at the Barre!

I’m almost there! Today I took my 35th of 36 classes! I’ll be going tomorrow as well, so the next time you hear from me, I’ll have completed the challenge (with a week to spare, which is good, because I’m going to Ontario next Thursday!).

This week I was perusing the Barre Fitness Pinterest page for some new recipe ideas to try out, and boy were there a LOT to choose from! They have groups of healthy recipes, snacks, salads, soups…pretty much everything you could ever need.

I’m sure you all recall my giant post on green smoothies, back near the beginning of the challenge, and I can say that they’ve become a pretty big staple of my diet. When it comes to other breakfast foods, I’m pretty picky… It’s either simple (aka cereal or toast) or it’s rich (french toast!), mostly because I cannot stand the texture of eggs.

So I decided to test something out I’ve been meaning to for a while… Buckwheat Pancakes!:

There were some delicious looking pancake recipes on the BF pinterest that I’m going to be trying out soon (like these!!!) but I nabbed this recipe from the internet.
I went full on gluten-free/100% buckwheat flour with these bad boys. They absorbed the syrup in no time and after only one and a half I was very very full.

I think if I were to make them again, I’d go half and half with the flour, and maybe make a blueberry compote (or just toss them right into the batter).
—

For lunch one day, I made these Lettuce Wraps w/ Quinoa and Black Beans (and so many other goodies)…

They were super easy to make, though there ended up being a TON of leftovers…but that’s what neighbours are for! I ate them …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

Foncie’s Corner Volume 17

May 24, 2013

From 1934 to 1979, street photographer Foncie Pulice set up his camera on Vancouver city sidewalks and snapped candid shots of people strolling by. For almost half a century, he took thousands of photos, unwittingly capturing moments in time, the history of a city, and the lives of British Columbians.

Now documentary filmmaker Melanie Wood and British Columbia’s Knowledge Network are bringing these photographs together – collecting them from albums around the province and giving them a public home. Photo negatives of Foncie’s images do not exist. He destroyed most of them when he retired. Until now there was no central archive or collection.

Here are some thoughts from the daughters of one of the subjects of this photo:
“My Mother, Sigrid, and her mother Emma Copp. Not sure why they were in Vancouver but it was a big deal to travel from Texada Island to Vancouver in those days, via the CPR boats. Not sure if this is before my parents were married. Perhaps it is the week they got married, as they were married by Rev. Pringle, in Vancouver.” – Sheila

This is a story about Vancouver, about British Columbia, and about it’s people… so they need your help. Visit Knowledge.ca/FonciesCorner to add your photos and stories to the collection.

We’re sharing a couple of Foncie photos here on V.I.A. each week leading up to the premiere of the documentary film being released in the summer. Share your memories (or the ones you find in your parents’ and grandparents’ archives) and become a part of Vancouver’s history!

“At Your Convenience” featured in @TheProvince!

May 23, 2013

Have you been following Jason Statler’s At Your Convenience photo series here on the blog? Wondering where it came from and what the goal is? Have a read through THIS INTERVIEW that Cheryl Chan did with Jason and which The Province published today. It’s also in the printed edition, so pick up a copy and check out page A8!

Also, I’d like to note that in the piece it says that I came up with the concept for the series, which isn’t 100% true. Former V.I.A. editor, Jesse Oye, came up with it years ago; I simply got the ball rolling and put it into action with Jason.

At Your Convenience: 2601 Quebec St.

May 22, 2013
At Your Convenience is a weekly ode to our indie convenience stores. The ones we frequent everyday and the hidden gems nestled in the heart of each neighbourhood. An old-school throwback in our modern world.

A well known shop to users of the 10th Ave bike route, Federal Store sits on the corner at Quebec St.

Super, Neighbours in BC: Feast Tofino 2013 – Part Five: What To Do!

May 22, 2013
Welcome to the latest series of Super, Neighbours blog posts where we highlight incredible travel destinations in British Columbia!

Feast Tofino is back for it’s third year and it’s better and longer than ever. Stretching throughout May, it features “Stay and Dine” packages as well as $29, $39 and $49 “Dine About” set price menus, special events, and celebrates “the abundance of seasonal produce, seafood and sustainable “boat-to-table” practices commonly adopted by the area’s restaurants” and the Tofino-Ucluelet Culinary Guild.

In this 5 part series I’m going to show you everything from the ease of travelling to Tofino, to the amazing food you can eat, activities you can try, places you can stay and people you can meet.

If you missed it, here’s Part One: Getting There!, Part Two: Where to Stay!, Part Three: Feast!, Part Four: TUCG and presenting:
Part Five: What To Do!

Finally after 4 other posts (links above) I’m going to show you some of the awesome things you can do while in Tofino (you know, if you leave your amazing hotel/aren’t feasting every second of the day)…

The Tofino Brewing Company was actually my very first stop…my cabin wasn’t ready yet, so of course I went to get some supplies (and beer to bring back home to Vancouver…which I may or may not be drinking while I’m typing this).

Amazing people behind the counter and samples/growler fills/bottles for sale…what more could you ask for? It was a great way to start the trip!

—
The day that I arrived the town was actually having a little street festival (you know, because they paved the street!)… Who was I to argue with checking out the bouncy castle, cotton candy, live music, and roller derby girls demonstration!

Saturday morning I woke up to find out I’d be setting out on what turned out to be quite the adventure…whale watching with local company Jamie’s. It was a blustery day and my face below illustrates what I looked like when it rained sideways on my face, but …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>
