Vancouver Is Awesome, and we are dedicated to everything that makes it that way.

If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

How do we know that CBC’s On The Coast is number one?

May 8, 2013

Great news from our friends at CBC today! For the first time ever, CBC Radio One’s On The Coast with Stephen Quinn has claimed the top spot for afternoon ratings in general audience numbers (I’ll tell you exactly how they track those at the end of this post).

A longtime listener, I featured Stephen on the blog back in November of 2011 as COFFEE #6 in my then-50 Coffees series (now 500 Coffees). A year and a half later he is still “that intelligent, witty and ultimately friendly personality that you hear on the radio every weekday afternoon” and along with the hard work of his producers (which include Matthew Lazin-Ryder who was my COFFEE #8) they bring us a range of engaging guests and stories about issues that are affecting our city and our province. It’s my personal favourite show to listen to when I’m in the office, and I think one of the key selling points is that even though I don’t always have time to actively listen to it I still get a lot out of it; Stephen is super active on Twitter and gives a heads up before most guests come on, so if listeners are particularly interested in a subject they can turn it on, or up, as they please. And he’s not simply giving notifications, he also delivers a brand of humour that I appreciate. You should FOLLOW HIM.

I asked him, through Twitter, how he was feeling about them being #1. Here’s his response:

AUDIO: One Awesome Thing on @ThePeak 102.7: Prince’s band playing at @ThePortsidePub this Sunday

April 12, 2013

Every Friday the Peak has me in as a guest on their Peak Mornings show to quickly chat about One Awesome Thing happening in Vancouver right now.

This morning I sat down with Laurie Logan and Cory Ashworth to talk about about Prince’s band and the launch of their North American tour at The Portside Pub this Sunday.

(Disregard the part at the end where we talk about what was in my pocket! It was an on-air giveaway we did shortly after)

AUDIO: One Awesome Thing on @ThePeak 102.7: Foncie’s Corner

March 26, 2013

Every Friday the Peak has me in as a guest on their Peak Mornings show to quickly chat about One Awesome Thing happening in Vancouver right now.

I recently sat down with Cory Ashworth and Laurie Logan to talk about about Vancouver’s most famed street photographer from 1934 to 1979.

Foncie Pulice set up his camera on Vancouver city sidewalks and snapped candid shots of people strolling by. For almost half a century, he took thousands of photos, unwittingly capturing moments in time, the history of a city, and the lives of British Columbians. Learn more HERE.

Michael Eckford leaves The Rush TV today

January 31, 2013

This just in from our friend (and member of our advisory board) Michael Eckford!:

“Today is a big day for me in my personal life and career. Earlier this week, I resigned as host of The Rush… or Urban Rush if you’re old timey! Today will be my last show.

Fiona will be continuing with the show and the two of us remain, and will always remain close friends. It has been one of the great pleasures of my life to work with someone so brilliant, funny and thoughtful.

So why leave? Basically, for the last year I have been working on The Rush and co hosting on the The Bro Jake Show on Rock 101. I feel like I have found a home on radio and after hosting the same TV show for so many years, I’m yearning for a new challenge in my television career. I don’t know what that looks like but I’m excited to figure it out.

I also want to publicly thank everyone at Shaw. They have been, and remain an incredible company and group of people to work with. Shaw TV allowed me to build a career and everyone there has been unwaveringly supportive of me personally and professionally. I look forward to watching someone else seize the opportunity to work with a great company and one of the best broadcasters in the business.

Thank you all for your support and friendship and if you miss me, tune in to the Bro Jake Show 6-10 in the morning on Classic Rock 101!”

**********

Mike, congratulations on the decision and best of luck in the next chapter!
