WE ARE VANCVR: Chairman Ting, Illustrator/Designer

March 27, 2012
Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community.VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Last Fall we had the fun task of plumbing our directory of local talent for some of the very best creatives in Vancouver to put forward as TEDx speakers. It gave us a chance to connect with Mike Nowland and Carson Ting, who we felt truly embody the collaborative spirit of VANCVR, through their co-created murals.

Around that time, Carson was in Hong Kong getting married to Denise Cheung. The newlyweds bring that spirit of collaboration home (literally) with their experimental project Chairman Ting Industries. Their goal in every creative endeavour is to make you smile—a mission we can totally get behind.

In the process they create some pretty innovative, inspired projects. Check them out below, and read on to find out why they like being creatives in Vancouver.

WE ARE VANCVR: Luke Liable, Photographer

March 13, 2012
Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community.VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

We don’t normally profile wedding photographers in this weekly feature—that’s what wedding blogs are for, right?—but darnit, we just were so charmed by Luke Liable‘s warm and quirky photos of people in love.

This Saskatchewan native first learned the basics of light and composition on his grandfather’s vintage Canon FTb. He dove headlong into his love of portrait and surf photography when he moved to the west coast in 2007 and made it his career in 2010.

Read on to find out why he likes being a creative in Vancouver.

WE ARE VANCVR: Zach Bulick, Designer

March 6, 2012
Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community.VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Zach Bulick just calls himself a designer—and yes, that’s his day job at Vancouver’s Union Gospel Mission—but this Texas native also has some serious illo and photography chops.

The honorary Canadian moved to Vancouver for university in 2004 and stuck around. We’re really glad he did. We love his illustrated designs for Homelessness Action Week and his fantastic type treatments, and we also think he’s a close tie for nicest guy in the city.

Bonus: after a visit to last year’s SXSW in his home state, Zach also became an unwitting Instagram-celebrity—his lovely light-washed feed is pushing 40,000 followers! Read on to find out why he loves being a creative in Vancouver.

Nathan Skillen is a rarity in the We Are Vancvr community—he’s a videographer, and only a videographer. In the last five years he’s worked the gamut of production roles around Vancouver for clients as diverse as Coca-cola and the Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Today the BCIT grad gets to focus on what he loves—events and music, shooting Green Couch Sessions and videos for local bands.

WE ARE VANCVR: Amy Pelletier Beck, photographer

Vancouver is an amazing city, chock full of creative talent. WE ARE VANCVR is a simple, elegant way to showcase all that talent in one place. Every Tuesday we profile one individual from the VANCVR community.VANCVR.com is a Domain7 Labs project.

Amy Pelletier Beck is a refreshing anomaly among Vancouver’s creatives. In a city full of talented urban photographers shooting daily life, Amy brings an artist’s eye to carefully curated shoots. Her Magritte-esque conceptual photography skillfully breaks down our relationships with objects. Her portraits are art directed yet captivating. The Emily Carr grad has shown her work throughout Vancouver—with solo shows at lowercase gallery and Malaspina Printmaker’s Society—and has had other exhibits in Toronto, Victoria and New York. Her work’s been published in Prefix Photo Magazine and Pyramid Power Magazine. Nice! Keep reading to find out how she’d like to collaborate with other creatives in Vancouver.
