The Old Familiar is Jon Bunyan’s private musical empire. For the past several years, Bunyan has been a name in the Vancouver music scene, most notably playing with the Canadian prog-rock sensation, Bend Sinister. Over several North American tours, Bunyan honed his songwriting skills with Bend Sinister, garnering awards such as CBC’s “Top Ten Songs of 2007” and Much Music’s “Buzziest Pick” along the way. In 2008, Bunyan decided to focus on his solo material, which 24 Hour Magazine has described as “upbeat Dylan and accessible Waits without ever being a mere imitation of such folk greats.” Since recording his debut full-length album, Bunyan has toured in Canada and Europe.

Jon made a new year’s resolution to record and share one track per month, and as long as he keeps up with it we’ll be bringing these tracks to you here on V.I.A.! Click to download the third one from us, for March 2010, entitled Early Afternoon.:

The Paralympic Games start tomorrow! I kinda forgot that Sumi was the mascot for the Paralympics, I just see all those cute mascots together and think “Olympics” in general. But he (she?) has been making his (her?) way across the country with the torch to light the cauldron for the Paralympics!

I’m not entirely sure of the source of this photo and normally I wouldn’t just grab something off of the internet and paste it onto our blog but this image must be shared. It’s nice having the streets back but those days of madness were a lot of fun, weren’t they?

A little bit of official wordage about the BC Book Prizes…
“The BC Book Prizes, established in 1985, celebrate the achievements of British Columbia writers and publishers.
The seven Prizes, plus The Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence, are presented annually at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prize Gala in April.
The Prizes are administered and awarded by members of a non-profit society who represent all facets of the publishing and writing community.”

Conan O’Brien is coming to Vancouver on April 13th and based on the fact that I laughed out loud simply at the name of his tour this should be nothing short of epicly hilarious. Tickets are a bit on the steep side (click HERE to check availability) but I imagine they’ll be going fast…

Russky Dom for Sochi 2014 – 4 of 4Science World Re-opens TODAY!

Over the span of the Games, Science World was turned into Russky Dom, a place for Russia to showcase what people can expect from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games being held in Sochi. Science World (or The World Of Science, as it were) is finally back in business as of today and this is the last of the images of a few of the artifacts from Russky Dom that I’ll be sharing with you.

It’s what Russky Dom looked like from the outside, as well as the countdown clock to Sochi 2014! Mark your calendar and let’s hope we take a ton more golds in 4 years!!!

We love art and design, hence we started a website called Artsy-Dartsy.com to help people like us find out about art and design events in our awesome city of Vancouver!This week there are tons of great events happening. This week 221A Artist Run Gallery presents Pact 4: Trade. It is being presented in conjunction with the World Tea Party and Bright Lights at the Vancouver Centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

Event: Friday, Mar 12, 7-10pm at Centre A, 2 West Hastings

This event is a non-juried show where everyone is welcome to contribute! Submit your work Thursday, Mar 11, 2-8pm

How it works:

1. Theme announced.
2. Work, interviews, reviews, resources, readings is/are produced/prepared/recorded/written/collected/selected by you and us.
3. Work submitted/installed/prepared one day prior from 2:00pm – 8:00pm.
4. Food & drink cooked/prepared/purchased potluck format.
5. Event held with all of above at 8:00pm – 11:00pm.
6. Work de-installed/cleaned/removed by 11:30pm.
7. Pact collateral collected and assembled into web publication. See archives.

Pact Purposes
1. Provide non-juried exhibition opportunity
2. Participation and celebration – community/volunteer/member
3. Building industry – networking/knowledge/resources

Other notables: Pendulum Gallery presents Heroes, opening Thursday, Mar 11, 6-9pm. Vancouver Art Gallery is FREE once again for the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games (Mar12-21). This week the VAG’s famous FUSE is on Friday, Mar 12.

Sad Mag – Issue 3 launch

Sad Mag is a Vancouver-based youth (under 30) arts and culture magazine, showcasing work from some of Vancouver’s best emerging writers and visual artists. They were nice enough to send along copies of the first two issues of the mag recently and have just announced the release of their third, for which they’re also throwing a party for at the Anza Club in just over a week’s time. Learn all about the mag HERE and about the release of the next issue below.
