The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #51

August 19, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in last week’s Ledge(r), local print product, Concrete Skateboarding, has released the 2011 Photo Annual, which is available now at your local skate emporium (for free). The above commercial promoting the issue features sick footage from Metro Vancouverites Corey Klim, Jordan Hoffart and John Hanlon.

Tomorrow, BLVD Skateshop is hosting a contest and BBQ at the Kensington bowl (Knight and 37th) starting at 1pm – open to all ages and skill levels. Can’t go wrong with a classic bowl jam. Stay tuned for more about Jamcouver, a skate event on September 24th that’s part of the Olio Festival (Sept.22-25); for now Color magazine posted a video segment featuring Wade Desarmo that reveals a little more. Skull Skates opened up its new location (3734 W.10th @ Alma) with a celebration on July 30th, and Mike McKinlay put together a vid from the event.

Our very own Ryan Decenzo continues killing big contests, recently getting 2nd at the Dew Tour’s Portland stop on Aug.11-14. He also appeared (along with Chris Haslam and company) in this African Vacation tour video. Adam Hopkins was spotted ripping the bowl down on Venice Beach recently, and Supra Dist. is set to drop a serious Derek Swaim part for the masses. Here’s the teaser:

With an election right around the corner, V.I.A.’s Most Awesome, Rob “Sluggo” Boyce should be on the ballot. Not only did he repaint the entire bowl at the Hastings skatepark (get the whole story/photos right here), Push.ca also put together a comprehensive retrospective video about Sluggo’s pro skate career and more. Click play above, it’s well worth a look.

As for web features this week, Vancouver photographer Rich Odam held down the trigger for a sequence feature, with GIF-animated bangers by Desmond Hoostie, Adam Hopkins and Arte Lew. SBC Skateboard has a cool feature online about Lifetime Collective’s Jeff Thorburn photo-documenting Calgary’s Sean MacAlister while he was in town for his March 18th “No Buddy Trusts Me Anymore” art show at Antisocial. North Van/SF’s Russ Milligan was interviewed on SkateNewSpot, and it includes a sweet video, while Keegan Sauder throws a little hot sauce on the fire in a recent 10 Qs session.

Viddy time: there’s a good ‘ol 1990s retrospective montage to gander, which has a dash of Slam City Jam in it. Ryan and Scott Decenzo were welcomed to the Arnette Sunglasses squad in this motion picture, and the Cult of Stacks art show/skate tour (remember these exclusive peeks?) now has an aftermath video featuring the skating of Cameo Wilson and Sebo Walker (keep an eye out for Bob K in this one):

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #16

Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As noted in the last Ledge(r), local magazine, Concrete Skateboarding, released Issue 110 nationwide early this week. The above web-commercial features the skating of MTL’s Will Cristofaro, Winnipeg’s Colin Lambert, SoCal’s Adam Dyet, Salmon Arm’s Sean Lowe, Richmond’s Tony Myshlyaev, and the cover-lad – North Delta’s Ryan Decenzo. (check the full credits in this post.)

Railtown’s Color magazine posted a “Best Tricks Of 2010″ web-feature a while back, giving the viewers a chance to vote. And so the people have spoken (well, clicked). Vegas-Vancouverite Cameo Wilson’s gap-to-backlip photo from Go Skateboarding Day took first, with Rick McCrank’s grind crusher coming in second.

I’ve been sharing posts about Adam Hopkins’ 2-month Greyhound skate-trip through the US here on the Ledge(r), and you can find the final one here, as well as the teaser to a little vert promo video he’s currently filming in his family’s barn while on an extended holiday stay back home in Thunder Bay.

Filmer/editor/ripper Zach Barton put together a little web edit of footage he had kicking around, and it features Zero Skateboards AM and Strathconite Sheldon Meleshinski:

“Film Fatties 2″, a locally produced skate vid, is silver-screen premiering downtown at the Granville 7 Cinemas tomorrow at 8pm with an afterparty at the Waldorf. Clicking right here will bring you to all the fine details.

In other local skate-event news, Commercial Drive’s BLVD skateshop is celebrating its 2-year anniversary in style at The Astoria tonight. Mini-ramp in the bar? Wet T-shirt contest? All that and more. Details here.

As for hot video links, Canadian board brand Redstar posted a video of their summertime Ontario tour featuring ‘Couver’s Paul Trep, Paul Machnau, and Chad Dickson. Bones Wheels put out a teaser for their January 2011 video, The Bönes Video, which includes hometown bros Jordan Hoffart and Ryan Decenzo.

Veteran pro and Vancouverite Gailea Momolu took the time to chat about his skate-career and what he’s up to now in this interview. Local ripper Adam Hopkins decided to take a long-ass Greyhound trip all around the US for 2 months. Clicking here and here will update you on his travels.

As the ender, North Van’s Sascha Daley is officially an AM on Mystery skateboards. This “welcome” part is insane (watch it full-screen):

North Van’s Sascha Daley has been making the most of his time down in Cali, filming for an upcoming video part for Mystery Skateboards. Click the above image to watch his recent “Mag Minute” appearance on The Skateboard Mag’s website.

In other video news, Rob Harris put together a fun little edit of a few Quiksilver dudes taking a trip from Toronto to Niagara Falls. It features LA’s Alex Olson, TO’s Pat O’Rourke and Vancouver’s (well, currently MTL’s) Torey Goodall along with Dario Phillips and Pryce Holmes. Watch it here. On Oct 14-17 at the Hard Rock in Vegas, North Delta’s Ryan Decenzo won 10Gs and sandwiched himself on the podium between Chaz Ortiz in first and Ryan Sheckler in third at the Dew Tour Championships. Video right here.

Vancouver filmmaker Peter Hadfield has web-shared a short entitled So Long. It’s an artful ode to summer featuring the skating of Tony Myshlaev and Kyle Vossenaar. It originally screened before the Vancouver premiere of Machotaildrop during the Olio Festival in late Sept.

Thunder Bay-to-’Couv transplant Adam Hopkins got a well-deserved web interview about his all-terrain status, and last but not least, Jordan Mayfield put together this little edit full of notable rippers getting their park-on at the Plaza, North Delta and Bonsor:
