If you want to read ugly, bad news about this beautiful city of ours, you’re going to have to look to traditional media and other blogs; V.I.A. promotes everything that makes our city awesome, from old to new and everything inbetween. We’re like the human interest piece on the news… only different.

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #26

February 25, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in Ledge(r) #25, the latest issue of Concrete Skateboarding is out and free for the freebirds. There’s also a commercial that goes along with it. Looky above.

In the blogroll department, a very tall Surrey stunt-wooder by the name of John Hanlon has been updating his new Blowin’ Smoke blog over on the Coastal Riders site. Chiggedy-check it. Color Magazine photo editor and astute lensman Gordon Nicholas has been getting his blog on as well. Brian Caissie just returned from snapping pics in the Far East, and the third installment of his China Report can be found here (archives located here).

As for videos, Jordan Hoffart talks Theeve Trucks (since he’s their latest pro) and puts his titanium to use at the Carmel Valley skatepark down in sunny San Diego. Watch it. Kitsch Skateboards’ Cory Wilson, Will Blakely, and Geoff Dermer got a little pre-street warm-up going at the PoCo park, and were joined by Trevor Houlihan, Arte Lew, and more. Take a looksy. And local clothing/apparel brand United Riders web-released their 2011 feature video, UNite the Streetz.

And what do we have here? It’s the Momentum Wheel Co.’s Yo Llama! Llama! video chronicling the skateboard (and Machu Picchu) adventures of Chris Haslam, Jose Rojo, Morgan Smith and Magnus Hanson in Peru:

Olympic mystery solved thanks to the Province newspaper!

February 19, 2011

Okay, it wasn’t a huge mystery but remember this image below from a year ago? As a policy we never yank photos off of the web and use them in blog posts but after the Games this one below went a bit viral on Twitter and Facebook and we were trying to get to the bottom of it’s source. We posted it and presented the question of “Do you know the source of this photo”?

A year later Erik Rolfsen from The Province came across the old blog post and said something to the effect of “I know the source: that’s our photo!” and he sent along THIS LINK to an expanded photo project that they launched, in the same spirit, which shows some Olympic hotspots then and now. Have a click through, it’s pretty amazing!

CBC Radio 3 Searchlight
The Local Competition: Discorder Magazine

February 13, 2011

Hey VIAindie fans… we made the cut into CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight TOP 60!!!
R3 is looking for The Best Canadian Music Website, and we’re honored to be nominated and that you guys have been voting for us!

That being said, we’re not the only ones from Vancouver/BC nominated, so we want to show off our competition.

There are FOUR days left to vote…YOU CAN DO SO BY CLICKING HERE.

So the sixth website in our “The Local Competition” feature is our friends at Discorder Magazine!

I don’t know what we can say about Discorder…they have been a wonderful partner to VIA…giving our magazine a home and throwing an amazing concert with us. Their website is just as great (think of the magazine, but digital!). We’d vote for them any day and if you want to too you have a few more days to do so!

***Check back daily to see another website by our Local Competition…and vote EVERY DAY (once a day) until Thursday the 17th***

CBC Radio 3 Searchlight
The Local Competition: CFUV, and Island Soapbox

February 12, 2011

Hey VIAindie fans… we made the cut into CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight TOP 60!!!
R3 is looking for The Best Canadian Music Website, and we’re honored to be nominated and that you guys have been voting for us!

That being said, we’re not the only ones from Vancouver/BC nominated, so we want to show off our competition.

There are FIVE days left to vote…YOU CAN DO SO BY CLICKING HERE.

Today you get two websites for the price of one in our “The Local Competition” feature. First up: CFUV

CFUV is the ONLY Radio Station that was nominated in the Searchlight competition and it made it through into the Top 60!
Based in Victoria, CFUV can boast that it focuses on quality and diversity in its music programing, rather than just mass appeal (sounds similar to the station hosting the contest!) …and according to its website, it is run by 200 volunteers!
Looks like we have some stiff competition on that basis alone… Congrats CFUV!

Next we have Island Soapbox!

I love our friends over at Island Soapbox…they were just tweeting me the other day! They feature and support many of the same artists that VIAindie loves; they do reviews, interviews and just send out general love to the BC music scene and its friends!
Their twitter is just as full of support as their website, and for that we salute you Island Soapbox!

If either of these two websites tickle your fancy, show them some Top 60 Love!…

***Check back daily to see another website by our Local Competition…and vote EVERY DAY (once a day) until Thursday the 17th***

CBC Radio 3 Searchlight
The Local Competition: ASAP Music Blog

February 11, 2011

Hey VIAindie fans… we made the cut into CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight TOP 60!!!
R3 is looking for The Best Canadian Music Website, and we’re honored to be nominated and that you guys have been voting for us!

That being said, we’re not the only ones from Vancouver/BC nominated, so we want to show off our competition.

There are SIX days left to vote…YOU CAN DO SO BY CLICKING HERE.

The third website in our “The Local Competition” feature is ASAP Music Blog.

I hadn’t heard of this site until the Searchlight competition started (another reason why it is great!)…but the two Vancouver girls that run it seem full of spunk and energy. Their blog does interviews, show/music reviews, and…GASP! A weekly playlist?! – Hmm… I smell collaboration (Ladies?).

So congrats to Fanny & Jessica and ASAP Music Blog for making the Top 60, and if they’re your favourite, give them a vote!

CBC Radio 3 Searchlight
The Local Competition: 3am Revelations

February 9, 2011

Hey VIAindie fans… we just found out that we made the cut into CBC Radio 3′s Searchlight TOP 60!!!
R3 is looking for The Best Canadian Music Website, and we’re honored to be nominated and that you guys have been voting for us!

That being said, we’re not the only ones from Vancouver/BC nominated, so we want to show off our competition.

There are NINE days left to vote…YOU CAN DO SO BY CLICKING HERE.

First up in our “The Local Competition” feature is 3am Revelations run by Kirk Hamilton.

Kirk’s website focuses on reviews of shows that happen in the Vancouver area…he’s sort of the words version of Scene & Heard! Actually, Kirk and I attend pretty much all of the same shows in the city, so if you’re looking for an honest word about what they were like, his is the blog to check out (because you know how positive we are about everything here at VIA… :p).

If Kirk’s name sounds familiar, you might recall that we had him do a playlist for us in January! – So if you like Kirk’s website, give him a vote!

***Check back every day to see another website by our Local Competition…and vote EVERY DAY (once a day) until Thursday the 17th***
