The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #51

August 19, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in last week’s Ledge(r), local print product, Concrete Skateboarding, has released the 2011 Photo Annual, which is available now at your local skate emporium (for free). The above commercial promoting the issue features sick footage from Metro Vancouverites Corey Klim, Jordan Hoffart and John Hanlon.

Tomorrow, BLVD Skateshop is hosting a contest and BBQ at the Kensington bowl (Knight and 37th) starting at 1pm – open to all ages and skill levels. Can’t go wrong with a classic bowl jam. Stay tuned for more about Jamcouver, a skate event on September 24th that’s part of the Olio Festival (Sept.22-25); for now Color magazine posted a video segment featuring Wade Desarmo that reveals a little more. Skull Skates opened up its new location (3734 W.10th @ Alma) with a celebration on July 30th, and Mike McKinlay put together a vid from the event.

Our very own Ryan Decenzo continues killing big contests, recently getting 2nd at the Dew Tour’s Portland stop on Aug.11-14. He also appeared (along with Chris Haslam and company) in this African Vacation tour video. Adam Hopkins was spotted ripping the bowl down on Venice Beach recently, and Supra Dist. is set to drop a serious Derek Swaim part for the masses. Here’s the teaser:

The ManWolfs strike today! The band of skateboarding heathens (as seen in the 2009 film, Machotaildrop), now have a shoe in éS Footwear’s Fall 2011 line. Machotaildrop creators/Vancouverites Corey Adams and Alex Craig put together the above video, Kick to Kill, to promote the éS shoe, and V.I.A. Most Awesome interviewee Rick McCrank along with plenty of locals and local spots appear in this creative flick.

The July 2011 issue (#113) of Concrete Skateboarding is now available in full online, along with a round-up of all the extras. East Van’s “Skinny” Tim McLeod is a skater, member of The Vicious Cycles band and a talented guitar builder who was recently featured on Push.ca. Ryan Decenzo and Jordan Hoffart were spotted by The Skateboard Mag’s video cam lens during a backyard mini-ramp sesh at Greg Lutzka’s Cali crib.

Brian Caissie’s second photo update from RDS’ Deadliest Skateboard Tour has dropped, and there’s video evidence of the Get Tricks contest marathon that happened in PoCo last Saturday - talent o’plenty. Cariboo Brewing has video-introduced Sean Lowe as the latest member of their growing skate team (I’d like a beer sponsor, please), and Chris Haslam filmed this Almost Skateboards commersh in Africa with little room for error…

Back in March, North Van/San Fran’s Russ Milligan, Calgary’s Kevin Lowry and SF’s Josh Matthews jumped on a bird and landed in Portugal to take in some culture and skateboarding. “The Portugal Recollection” was born – an 8-page feature in the July 2011 issue of Concrete (out now) along with the above video supplement.

The C1RCA Canada In Texas webisodes have started up on the Color site, the first one being a visit to Dallas with the ‘Couv’s Magnus Hanson, Corey Klim, Will Blakley and Sheldon Meleshinski. REAL pros Justin Brock and Peter Ramondetta were grilled about Canadiana at the Loose Moose a few months back, and the feature recently web-surfaced. Fleetwood’s John Hanlon made an appearance in last week’s “Five Sequences” on the Thrasher site, and the fine work of local photographer Rich Odam was web-featured in The Skateboard Mag‘s “Fresh Crops”. In more photo news, our-town’s Brian Caissie shares some aged polaroids featuring an epic cast of characters.

Montreal’s Barry Walsh is well-known in Vancouver and fondly looks back at living here for a lengthy ’90s-span in his well-deserved Living Legends retrospective video. Richmond’s Chris Haslam was spotted having a good time amongst his Almost Skateboards brethren down at the Hollywood Park, and Jordan Hoffart poured it on at Quiksilver’s Door 33 in Cali. East Van’s Spencer Hamilton is on a European Tour with SUPRA Footwear’s elite list of teamsters (check out photos of Spenny and company in Edinburgh and Manchester). Beer sponsor? Billy Mitchell puts his footage on display for Cariboo brew (including some clips shot while the Vancouver Plaza has been getting renovated and upgraded):

As a ScanLife supplement to a feature from their latest issue, SBC Skateboard posted a video of Canadian board brand Red Star on a winter getaway to LA county, with a little Vegas in the mix. Vancouver’s Chad Dickson and Paul Machnau appear in this one.

You’ll find a little update on the renovations taking place at the Vancouver Plaza, as well as some construction photos from the state-of-the-art Chuck Bailey skatepark in Surrey by clicking here. On May 14th the Etnies x Sheckler Foundation’s Skate For A Cause contest went down in Lake Forest, CA, where Ryan Decenzo earned 4Gs and handed it over to charity. Find more info, photos and a video here. Might as well mention that Ryan (and John Hanlon) hold it down for Metro Van in this commercial by Darkstar Skateboards.

Color Magazine teamed up with REAL Skateboards for their Issue 9.2 commersh, which features REAL’s recreation of the intro to their very first video (The Real Video, ’93) that was used in 2011′s Since Day One. Fans of Chris Haslam will appreciate these buddy-cam videos (here and here). Photographer extraordinaire Scott Pommier has a solid video interview you should watch on camerabag.tv, and Coquitlam’s Micky Papa calls these clips “throwaways” (but I beg to differ). The other half of the Decenzo Bros, Scott, is featured in this CCS commercial:

The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

The Railtown-based Color Magazine swoops in with its second issue of 2011, so you should keep an eye out since it’ll be on newsstands right quick. #9.2 is dubbed “The Music Issue”, and by clicking here you’ll be lead to its plethora of features. Antoine Asselin and his huge ollie at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium adorn the cover, which was shot by Kasey Andrews.

Concrete Skateboarding‘s May 2011 issue has Ian Twa on the cover (as previewed in Ledge(r) #33); now there’s a web-exclusive alternate angle of that cover, which opens into an extended flip-through version of “1611 East” – the title feature in the May issue about Twa and company’s East Van skate house. Check it all out right here. Former Metro Van resident and sponsored skater Sean Hayes moved down to SoCal 4 years ago, and now he’s putting his education and experience to use as an Action Sports Coach. In his first year he helped Ryan Sheckler win X-Games gold and Aldrin Garcia break a world high-ollie record. Click here for the full story.

There’s a contest/BBQ going on at the Bonsor park in Burnaby tomorrow, details here. Need some video links? There’s plenty. Chris Haslam takes the unconventional route during a test run of his signature “Double Impact” board from Almost. Spencer Hamilton holds it down in the SUPRA Footwear “Three Amigos” Texas tour video (beware of the bad words). Paul Trep surfaced at the North Hollywood skatepark long enough to log a few clips, and Jordan Hoffart’s ender part from The Bönes Video is also this Ledge(r)‘s ender:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #23

February 4, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Chris Haslam, the world-renowned pro from Richmond has been getting a lot of love over on the Thrasher site these days (case-in-point: the above mini-ramp part from 2006′s Cheese & Crackers, complete with Daewon Song commentary). In fact, this past week has been dedicated to his wizardry, while celebrating the release of his latest Globe shoe: the Odin. Consider this a “warning” that amidst his fine wood-wheeling capabilities lies a dreamscape that includes a topless model in this commercial promoting Haz’ new kicks.

In other Ledge(r)-friendly news, former Vancouverite and Girl/Chocolate/Lakai honcho Rick Howard has been righteously chromeballed, with a feature that includes retro ads and such from his long-standing and still-in-progress skate career. Vancouver skate photographer Brian Caissie took on a little “35mm photo-a-day” project recently, which dipped into his 1997-2004 film archives and went on a 56-day stretch. Learn all about it right here.

Antisocial skateshop’s Michelle Pezel is currently taking a little time off to volunteer her skate-expertise at the Skateistan school in Kabul, Afghanistan. For more details and links, click right here. On January 21st, Roger Allen was interviewed on Nardwuar The Human Serviette Radio Show on (Fridays @ 3:30-5:00 on 101.9 CiTR FM) about the history of Skate Rock. Roger spun everything from surf rock to thrash for about an hour. Click here to listen.

On Thursday, Feb.10th at 7pm The Bönes Video is premiering at The Rio (with Powell-Peralta’s 1987 classic The Search For Animal Chin playing afterwards). And for this Ledge(r)‘s ender, Jordan Hoffart provides audio commentary to his breakout part in 2006′s Get Tricks Or Die Tryin’ by Digital Skateboarding (bad words are involved, but they’re from a good Canadian kid):
