The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #51

August 19, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in last week’s Ledge(r), local print product, Concrete Skateboarding, has released the 2011 Photo Annual, which is available now at your local skate emporium (for free). The above commercial promoting the issue features sick footage from Metro Vancouverites Corey Klim, Jordan Hoffart and John Hanlon.

Tomorrow, BLVD Skateshop is hosting a contest and BBQ at the Kensington bowl (Knight and 37th) starting at 1pm – open to all ages and skill levels. Can’t go wrong with a classic bowl jam. Stay tuned for more about Jamcouver, a skate event on September 24th that’s part of the Olio Festival (Sept.22-25); for now Color magazine posted a video segment featuring Wade Desarmo that reveals a little more. Skull Skates opened up its new location (3734 W.10th @ Alma) with a celebration on July 30th, and Mike McKinlay put together a vid from the event.

Our very own Ryan Decenzo continues killing big contests, recently getting 2nd at the Dew Tour’s Portland stop on Aug.11-14. He also appeared (along with Chris Haslam and company) in this African Vacation tour video. Adam Hopkins was spotted ripping the bowl down on Venice Beach recently, and Supra Dist. is set to drop a serious Derek Swaim part for the masses. Here’s the teaser:

The locally produced Concrete Skateboarding magazine just dropped the 2011 Photo Annual (available for free at your local skateshop), and it features regional covers. Surrey’s John Hanlon has a sick frontside bluntslide (shot by Rich Odam) for the Western Canada cover, and Ottawa’s Richard Sarrazin and his fakie 5-0 revert is on the East cover. Click here for a preview run-through of each cuv and the major features.

Surrey’s brand spankin’ new (and most expensive skatepark in BC) was recently profiled on Push.ca, John Hanlon (shown on the above Concrete cover) filmed an OGIO commercial there. Photographer Brian Caissie survived the RDS Deadliest Skateboard Tour across Canada for 3 weeks, and came back with a blog post look-back at the trip.

Color just dropped the final webisode of C1RCA Canada in Texas (along with this web feature by Gordon Nicholas), while Corey Klim took a roll at the Plaza for Cariboo Brew. the 2nd annual Vans Roadblock went down on Granville St. last Saturday, and the results are in: Underworld took $1000 and Coastal Riders dominated the local shop x creative obstacle invitational with a whopping $3000 to split amongst the teamsters. Here’s the video recap:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #42

Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Back in March, North Van/San Fran’s Russ Milligan, Calgary’s Kevin Lowry and SF’s Josh Matthews jumped on a bird and landed in Portugal to take in some culture and skateboarding. “The Portugal Recollection” was born – an 8-page feature in the July 2011 issue of Concrete (out now) along with the above video supplement.

The C1RCA Canada In Texas webisodes have started up on the Color site, the first one being a visit to Dallas with the ‘Couv’s Magnus Hanson, Corey Klim, Will Blakley and Sheldon Meleshinski. REAL pros Justin Brock and Peter Ramondetta were grilled about Canadiana at the Loose Moose a few months back, and the feature recently web-surfaced. Fleetwood’s John Hanlon made an appearance in last week’s “Five Sequences” on the Thrasher site, and the fine work of local photographer Rich Odam was web-featured in The Skateboard Mag‘s “Fresh Crops”. In more photo news, our-town’s Brian Caissie shares some aged polaroids featuring an epic cast of characters.

Montreal’s Barry Walsh is well-known in Vancouver and fondly looks back at living here for a lengthy ’90s-span in his well-deserved Living Legends retrospective video. Richmond’s Chris Haslam was spotted having a good time amongst his Almost Skateboards brethren down at the Hollywood Park, and Jordan Hoffart poured it on at Quiksilver’s Door 33 in Cali. East Van’s Spencer Hamilton is on a European Tour with SUPRA Footwear’s elite list of teamsters (check out photos of Spenny and company in Edinburgh and Manchester). Beer sponsor? Billy Mitchell puts his footage on display for Cariboo brew (including some clips shot while the Vancouver Plaza has been getting renovated and upgraded):

Part of V.I.A.’s esteemed “Most Awesome” category, Rob “Sluggo” Boyce was invited to skate in the 7th Annual Pro-Tec Pool Party contest at the world-famous (and gnarly) Combi-Bowl down at the Vans park in Orange, CA. Sluggo cracked the top 10 in the 40-and-older Masters division, which included such legends as Tony Hawk (his first contest in a decade), Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Duane Peters, and the list goes on. Click here for the official Masters/Pro results, and watch the Sluggo highlights above.

Events: Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Sheckler, Torey Pudwill and Colin McKay from Plan B Skateboards will be doing a signing at West 49 in the Park Royal Shopping Centre today at 4pm. The partially roof-covered Chuck Bailey skatepark in Whalley, Surrey is officially opening on Saturday, May 28th with an event at 11am (details here). The KR3W/Shake Junt Smash ‘N’ Grab Canadian tour features Erik Ellington, Lizard King, Figgy, Beagle, Kevin Romar, Bryan Herman, Neen Williams, Shane Heyl, MTL’s JS Lapierre and Vancouver’s Spencer Hamilton. The final stop of their trip happens in Vancouver on Sunday, May 29th – a 2pm demo/signing at the new Chuck Bailey park, with a 10pm afterparty at The Met (320 Abbott St., Gastown).

YouTubes: The possible closure of “The Barn”, a long-time DIY ramp haven in Brittania Beach, was the subject of a CTV News report earlier this week (watch it here). Micky Papa and Paul Trep check in with a few quick clips shot down in Beverly Hills, Nick Moore tests out the new Thunder Trucks, and Jordan Hoffart shows us what goes on behind the ad for Active Ride Shop. Corey Klim gets down at a couple parks for Cariboo Beer, and it’s officially official: Fleetwood, Surrey’s John Hanlon is the new AM on Darkstar Skateboards:

Ryan Decenzo is once again making Vancouver proud, this time by getting a dozen bangers at Transworld‘s indoor park down in Cali. Ryan (alongside Colin McKay, Jordan Hoffart and 30 other notable pros) will also be taking part in the Etnies x Sheckler Foundation’s Skate For A Cause on May 14th in Lake Forest, CA. The event will benefit Autism Speaks.

Vancouver’s Most Evil will certainly shed that monicker with his latest deed; Deer Man Of Dark Woods is donating his Skull Skates board royalties to the BC SPCA’s Wild ARC animal rehabilitation program. In close-to-home news, the first stop of Street League Skateboarding happened last weekend in nearby Seattle; V.I.A.’s own Jef Choy (aka Jesse Oye) was in attendance and added his personal touch to this blog post featuring a highlight reel of the finals.

Color Magazine has posted a trailer for their upcoming webisodes featuring Sheldon Meleshinski, Corey Klim, Dustin Henry, Will Blakley and Magnus Hanson from C1RCA Canada navigating the highway system of Texas. Concrete just beefed up their online mag archives by adding the complete 1993 publishing season, and SBC Skateboard posted previews of their latest issue (which includes a feature interview with East Van’s Ian Twa). As for this week’s video ender, Spencer Hamilton takes it again, much like he did in Ledge(r) #33:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #32

April 8, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Supra Distribution released another video from their February 2011 adventures in China (watch Part 1 here and get the full photo report from that trip here). The above Part 2 vid features AJ McCallister and Corey Klim.

The big Canadian premiere of REAL skateboards’ Since Day One happened at the Granville 7 Cinemas on April 2nd. I got a chance to hang with Peter Ramondetta, Mic-E Reyes, Jim Thiebaud, Ishod Wair and Justin Brock at the good ol’ Loose Moose before the big show; photos here.

Surrey’s Coastal Riders won the 2010 C1RCA Store Wars, and part of the deal was an limited edition run of C1RCA x Coastal shoes; get a sneak peek here, and watch the video entry that sealed the deal. Sean Lowe often lurks in Vancouver via Salmon Arm, and he recently partook in an entertaining “Rise Up” interview on Push.ca. Ryan Decenzo visited The Berrics down in LA for the first time, and it was for a First Try Fridays, no less. He’s also about to get some trucks with his name on ‘em.

For a few video enders, Zach Barton was spotted casually destroying the 7-set rail/stairs at the Van Plaza, and Joey Williams was spotted pushing around Midtown in NYC. The North Delta park was abused by wood, urethane and metal thanks to Mike Schulze, Dustin Locke, Magnus Hanson and company. Take a look:
