The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #52

August 26, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Coquitlam’s Micky Papa not only has an awesome name, but he filmed his entire Mo’ Mondays part for Bones Wheels in one day at the Vancouver Plaza. Rain? It just don’t matter to Micky (hit mute and let the skating do the talking if you can’t hang with profanity-laced rap).

The 17th annual Bowl Series is wrapping up this weekend, with an event on Saturday at the Squamish park, and the finals on Sunday at the Whistler bowl (details here). Last Saturday’s contest at the Kensington bowl (well, pool) had a great turnout, and you’ll find photos and the top 3 finishers right here, as well as some video footage here. In the web interview department, there’s one featuring Stacy Gabriel in regards to his “Light Wallet Lifestyle” (complete with a raging comment-debate) right here, and another featuring the one and only Daniel “Alien” Nelson.

Vancouver’s Kitsch Skateboards teamed up with the Island’s Instrumental Skateboards squad for a little bro-down tour of Nanaimo, Courtenay and Vic from Aug.7-9; a full web feature from said excursion can be found right here. Some flawless footy of Wade Desarmo from years back is online, and Ryan Decenzo manhandled Hollywood High in this clip for Orion Trucks. East Van’s Ian Beer is an avid collector of unique cameras, and authored a feature called “The Format Sampler” for the Concrete 2011 Photo Annual. Check out the online version of the feature here, and take a look at a sample video he made for the cause using a Digital Harinezumi 1 at the Hastings bowl with Mikey Klinkhamer as the subject:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #51

August 19, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in last week’s Ledge(r), local print product, Concrete Skateboarding, has released the 2011 Photo Annual, which is available now at your local skate emporium (for free). The above commercial promoting the issue features sick footage from Metro Vancouverites Corey Klim, Jordan Hoffart and John Hanlon.

Tomorrow, BLVD Skateshop is hosting a contest and BBQ at the Kensington bowl (Knight and 37th) starting at 1pm – open to all ages and skill levels. Can’t go wrong with a classic bowl jam. Stay tuned for more about Jamcouver, a skate event on September 24th that’s part of the Olio Festival (Sept.22-25); for now Color magazine posted a video segment featuring Wade Desarmo that reveals a little more. Skull Skates opened up its new location (3734 W.10th @ Alma) with a celebration on July 30th, and Mike McKinlay put together a vid from the event.

Our very own Ryan Decenzo continues killing big contests, recently getting 2nd at the Dew Tour’s Portland stop on Aug.11-14. He also appeared (along with Chris Haslam and company) in this African Vacation tour video. Adam Hopkins was spotted ripping the bowl down on Venice Beach recently, and Supra Dist. is set to drop a serious Derek Swaim part for the masses. Here’s the teaser:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #49

Take a look at SixOhFor Media’s Vancouver Throwaway Montage 2011 above, and check out another of their ‘Couver cuts right here. SBC Skateboard ran a feature in their latest issue called “Gringos con Hielo” that includes frequent Kamloops-to-Van visitor Matt Berger, along with locals Arte Lew, Mike Schulze and Sean Lowe on a Mexico City skate-adventure. Watch the supplementary video evidence right here.

The 2nd annual Vans Roadblock is happening this Saturday, August 6th at 1pm on Granville St. downtown. It’s not to be missed as it pits 4 local skate shop teams against each other, and each shop involved has to provide a custom obstacle for the contest (details here). Renowned skate-artist Don Pendleton submitted his picks for the 50 greatest skate logos of all time to complex.com – here they are, and Van’s Skull Skates made the cut. Strathcona’s Alex “Teddy” Stursberg put together a Fall 2011 graphic series for the Momentum Wheel Co., and here are some previews. Coastal Riders’ Dustin Locke has a feature interview over on Push.ca.

North Van’s Russ Milligan appears in this promo vid for Think Skateboards’ Winter 2011 feature-length vid, and Ryan Decenzo took on a Bangin! segment down at The Berrics (he also got $25K and a Silver medal for his X Games 17 Real Street performance). To finish? Another appearance from Matt Berger, who is clearly on another level:

The ManWolfs strike today! The band of skateboarding heathens (as seen in the 2009 film, Machotaildrop), now have a shoe in éS Footwear’s Fall 2011 line. Machotaildrop creators/Vancouverites Corey Adams and Alex Craig put together the above video, Kick to Kill, to promote the éS shoe, and V.I.A. Most Awesome interviewee Rick McCrank along with plenty of locals and local spots appear in this creative flick.

The July 2011 issue (#113) of Concrete Skateboarding is now available in full online, along with a round-up of all the extras. East Van’s “Skinny” Tim McLeod is a skater, member of The Vicious Cycles band and a talented guitar builder who was recently featured on Push.ca. Ryan Decenzo and Jordan Hoffart were spotted by The Skateboard Mag’s video cam lens during a backyard mini-ramp sesh at Greg Lutzka’s Cali crib.

Brian Caissie’s second photo update from RDS’ Deadliest Skateboard Tour has dropped, and there’s video evidence of the Get Tricks contest marathon that happened in PoCo last Saturday - talent o’plenty. Cariboo Brewing has video-introduced Sean Lowe as the latest member of their growing skate team (I’d like a beer sponsor, please), and Chris Haslam filmed this Almost Skateboards commersh in Africa with little room for error…

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #47

July 22, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Photographer Brian Caissie spent a month in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China with a grip of Vancouverites earlier this year to shoot a comprehensive “China Report” for Concrete. He brought the Sony “Bloggie” from the office with him for some homie-cam action, but returned sans-Bloggie (it was swallowed by a massive Shenzhen nightclub). Above you’ll find a cut of the salvaged B-roll footy. Caissie also recently reported from the first leg of the cross-Canada RDS Deadliest Skateboard Tour.

Events o’plenty. There’s a video to watch of last weekend’s Underworld x CONS Game of L.E.D.G.E., which came down to a close finish. Tomorrow at 1pm it’s UW’s Get Tricks contest at the Railside park in PoCo. The Bowl Series #17 poster has also been released, so now you’re informed.

Leading up to Color magazine’s 3rd episode of C1RCA Canada in Texas, they’ve released a short video featuring Nate Roline, who was left behind due to passport issues. Even though Ryan Decenzo was edged out of the X-Games Real Street final by a 2% vote margin, he got to skate the Double Rock park in SF with his Darkstar brethren. Cariboo Beer helped out with some sundown sips at Kensington, and a killer Plaza montage is how we’ll end ‘er this week…

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #46

SBC Skateboard magazine is set to drop their late summer issue, #13.3, and East Van’s Nick Moore graces the cover with a serious gap-to-crook. Click here to check out the issue’s previews, and watch the teaser for their upcoming video Gringos On Ice, featuring our town’s Arte Lew, Matt Berger, Mike Schulze and Sean Lowe in Mexico City.

In more mag news, Color has posted previews for their Collector’s Issue (#9.3), so keep an eye on the stands. The CONS Game of L.E.D.G.E is happening downtown on Saturday, literally right on Granville Street (details here). RDS kicks off Canada’s Deadliest Skateboard Tour this Sunday with a 3pm demo at the new Chuck Bailey park (13458 – 107A Avenue, Surrey). The team is stacked, so don’t miss it. Last Saturday I had the chance to go skate the new Pemberton park with Craig Williams, Cam Weishaar and Adam Cassidy from Ultimate Distribution. Turned out to be a sweet day trip.

In X-Games Real Street news, Ryan Decenzo’s video part has advanced yet again (for good reason), and getting more votes than Billy Marks in this round means a spot in the final (vote for Ryan right here). Veteran pro Paul Machnau has been a skate mentor to Ryan Decenzo and other notable rippers over the years, and Push.ca recently dedicated a Living Legends video to him (read more in the the original post):
