The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #51

August 19, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As mentioned in last week’s Ledge(r), local print product, Concrete Skateboarding, has released the 2011 Photo Annual, which is available now at your local skate emporium (for free). The above commercial promoting the issue features sick footage from Metro Vancouverites Corey Klim, Jordan Hoffart and John Hanlon.

Tomorrow, BLVD Skateshop is hosting a contest and BBQ at the Kensington bowl (Knight and 37th) starting at 1pm – open to all ages and skill levels. Can’t go wrong with a classic bowl jam. Stay tuned for more about Jamcouver, a skate event on September 24th that’s part of the Olio Festival (Sept.22-25); for now Color magazine posted a video segment featuring Wade Desarmo that reveals a little more. Skull Skates opened up its new location (3734 W.10th @ Alma) with a celebration on July 30th, and Mike McKinlay put together a vid from the event.

Our very own Ryan Decenzo continues killing big contests, recently getting 2nd at the Dew Tour’s Portland stop on Aug.11-14. He also appeared (along with Chris Haslam and company) in this African Vacation tour video. Adam Hopkins was spotted ripping the bowl down on Venice Beach recently, and Supra Dist. is set to drop a serious Derek Swaim part for the masses. Here’s the teaser:

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #49

The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

Take a look at SixOhFor Media’s Vancouver Throwaway Montage 2011 above, and check out another of their ‘Couver cuts right here. SBC Skateboard ran a feature in their latest issue called “Gringos con Hielo” that includes frequent Kamloops-to-Van visitor Matt Berger, along with locals Arte Lew, Mike Schulze and Sean Lowe on a Mexico City skate-adventure. Watch the supplementary video evidence right here.

The 2nd annual Vans Roadblock is happening this Saturday, August 6th at 1pm on Granville St. downtown. It’s not to be missed as it pits 4 local skate shop teams against each other, and each shop involved has to provide a custom obstacle for the contest (details here). Renowned skate-artist Don Pendleton submitted his picks for the 50 greatest skate logos of all time to complex.com – here they are, and Van’s Skull Skates made the cut. Strathcona’s Alex “Teddy” Stursberg put together a Fall 2011 graphic series for the Momentum Wheel Co., and here are some previews. Coastal Riders’ Dustin Locke has a feature interview over on Push.ca.

North Van’s Russ Milligan appears in this promo vid for Think Skateboards’ Winter 2011 feature-length vid, and Ryan Decenzo took on a Bangin! segment down at The Berrics (he also got $25K and a Silver medal for his X Games 17 Real Street performance). To finish? Another appearance from Matt Berger, who is clearly on another level:

Canada’s oldest skate shop is making moves

July 29, 2011

A couple of years back I shared THIS magazine article from Transworld Skateboarding which featured Vancouver skateboard brand, Skull Skates, as well as PD’s Hot Shop, two institutions that go hand in hand and are in fact run by the same dude. The feature is a great history lesson first on the skateboard brand, which is Canada’s oldest clocking in at over 3 decades, as well as the store which is about to turn 35 this year… and is also Canada’s oldest skateshop.

Skull Skates and Hot Shop‘s owner, PD, is an old friend of mine. In fact, I designed one of the earliest incarnations of the brand’s web site back in the late 90′s. When I heard that he was shutting down his store at 2868 West 4th Ave, which has been it’s location for more than a decade now, at first I was a little concerned that he might be shutting down the retail side for good, then I thought for a second that he might be moving it to another, perhaps more affordable city. Then I shook my head when I saw the news that they’re simply moving to a new location on West 10th, closer to the beach. I asked PD why he’s chosen to keep his business in the city for so long to which he replied “The culture of Vancouver and Skull Skates flow together like leaky and condo”, which is to say, Skull is an integral part of this city and, for better or for worse, they’re not going anywhere.

Okay, they are going somewhere. They’re going to West 10th Avenue. 3734 West 10th Avenue to be exact. And they’re throwing a big grand opening party there this Saturday to celebrate! Learn more HERE.

THE OFFICIAL WORD:
Born from a need for pro-quality skateboards in 1976, PD’s Hot Shop in Vancouver stands as Canada’s oldest existing skateboard shop. The Skull Skates skateboard company was launched as a creative extension of the Hot Shop in 1978 and continues to earn support from enthusiasts worldwide as Canada’s oldest skateboard brand.

For over 3 decades PD’s Hot Shop and Skull Skates have set up tens of thousands of custom built skateboards, not to mention the occasional skimboard, bicycle, snowboard, hoody, sticker etc. serving generations of customers. More than half of those decades have been …READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY>>>

The Weekly Ledge(r) – Episode #43

June 24, 2011
Skateboard culture is deeply rooted in this fine city of ours. Not only does Metro Vancouver produce some of the world’s finest wood-wheelers, it’s also a major migratory destination for skaters from all over Canada. The Weekly Ledge(r) exists to update you on skate-related news and happenings in our town. Know the ledge, it’s not just used for sitting…

As I pointed out in this public service announcement, there was a grip of events throughout the day on Tuesday, June 21st that celebrated Go Skateboarding Day, which is always a big deal in Vancouver. The above video (filmed by Brian Caissie for Push.ca) summarizes the main critical-mass-like event (as do these photos), and this here vid features Dan “Alien” Nelson and Deer Man Of Dark Woods handling GSD in Calgary as part of the Van Wilder Tour. Queensborough in New West got in on the action as well. Down in Cali, Jordan Hoffart took in GSD by skating Quiksilver’s Door 33.

In other news, Take Five Trading in Vancouver announced its HUF Canada team, which includes some sweet locals. Skull Skates/PD’s Hot Shop has opened a new location at 3734 West 10th (at Alma), and its near-18-year location on West 4th will temporarily remain open as well – details here. Mike Campbell got some clips, which might very well be one of the last edits from Plaza 1.0, since renovations/additions are now complete and it’s pretty much a new park. Kyutae Kim knows how to work a video camera and skate in front of it well, which landed him a spot (complete with a welcome video) on the Coastal Riders shop roster. To finish #43, Ian Twa and Robbie Pellack paid a visit to SkateNewSpot.com’s Ben Oleynik in NYC, and came back with some footy:

B.A.K.U. AND PD ON URBAN RUSH!

December 18, 2010

Back on Halloween, I introduced you to this guy.  I remember thinking that maybe V.I.A. wasn’t the right venue for it, definitely not Dan Mangan at the Orpheum.

Looks like I wasn’t too far off the mark though, holy crap… B.A.K.U. hanging with Fiona and Michael?

This would never happen anywhere else other than Vancouver… it just wouldn’t.

Great PD interview too… I’m still mildly in shock…

“Snow it begins” – @MayorGregor

November 20, 2010

The mayor made a tweet this morning that the city has released it’s revised gameplan for snow removal in 2010/2011, so I poked over to the LINK he provided and had a look at what to expect as well as what they’re expecting of us (shovel your walk before 10AM, folks!). When I came across all of the equipment that the city owns for snow removal I scratched my head for a minute, wondering what on earth a “brine tanker” was. Some quick digging brought the answer that it’s a sort of salt truck that goes along the separated bike routes and shucks salty brine over them instead of trying to actually shovel them. If you know of any place that sells personal driveway-sized brine tankers then you know exactly what I want for Christmas.

And while we’re on the subject of bikes and gifts, I was down at PD’s Hotshop on 4th Avenue this past week and did a double take at the Skull Skates BMX cruisers they’ve got built up. They come with a Limited Edition Skull Skates frame, what looks like a $200 seat as well as some other fancy parts all for only $599. And that’s not a sale price. That’s just the price that it is. It may not be a commuter that you’d ride to work on a separated bike lane but if you’re looking for a Christmas present for yourself this just might be it. Check it out HERE on their web site.
