Crews have been on scene since early this morning battling a fire on a barge on the Fraser River in Surrey containing what appeared to be old cars and tires, sending a giant plume of noxious smoke into the air.
The barge is located near the Pattullo Bridge in an industrial area.

Crews from the Surrey side of the river are on scene battling the fire, but thus far the flames and smoke continue.
The New Westminster Fire Department has also been vigilant.
“We did go down and we did patrol areas and we did monitor to see if there was any ash or anything like that coming over the city," Platoon Capt. Loss told the Record. "We definitely have been aware of it and have been monitoring it from our end of it, but at this time Surrey hasn’t asked for any help from us.”

The smoke has prompted an air quality warning from Metro Vancouver:
