Commercial-Broadway Station will offer all-door boarding to SkyTrain passengers for the first time this February.
Part of TransLink’s Maintenance and Repair Program, the upgrade was introduced to help improve the passenger experience on the SkyTrain. This station was chosen because it experiences a high volume of traffic daily. In fact, it is the second busiest station on the system, with a whopping 200,000 transit journeys each weekday.
Starting February 2, the station will allow passengers heading Westbound to downtown Vancouver to get on or off on either side of the SkyTrain car. As such, TransLink notes that this process will allow passengers to travel quicker through the station by reducing congestion on the platform. It highlights that passengers may choose which side to depart from based on the travel plans following their Skytrain ride.
For example, if they plan to take the 99 B-line or another bus they will exit the doors on left (Platform 3). For those who plan to take the Millennium Line they will exit the doors on right (Platform 5). The transit authority notes that this method will improve passenger flow through the station.
Upgrades to the station include:
- A new platform for westbound Expo Line trains
- A new walkway above Broadway, connecting the new platform directly to the Millennium Line
- A new B–Line shelter
- An expanded entrance and concourse area for the Broadway stationhouse
- Two new elevators and four new up/down escalators
- More customer amenities including a new bike parkade (capacity: 42 bikes), public art, and retail space
TransLink also wants to hear from riders before they order 203 new cars to get a sense of what layout they prefer. Open from January 14 until January 25, you are able to take a SkyTrain Fleet Expansion Survey to have your say.
