The World Economic Forum has ranked the best countries for travellers worldwide and Canada placed in the top ten.
The international report ranks over 140 countries on 90 criteria related to a country's infrastructure, safety, hygiene, but also tourism-oriented policies, cultural attractions, and natural resources.
Spain took the top spot, with report authors noting that the European country offers vibrant cities and sunny beaches, as well as a diverse cultural programme that spans from medieval festivals to contemporary art. France came second, and was noted for its châteaux, museums, and gorgeous coastlines. Germany ranked third, making the top three all European countries.
Japan placed fourth with the United States placing in fifth. Canada came ninth, with Switzerland rounding off the top ten. Yemen, Chad and Liberia ranked at the bottom of the list.
“As international connectedness continues to rise, we see travel and tourism competitiveness continue to grow,” says Christoph Wolff, Head of Mobility, World Economic Forum.
“Increased tourism is bringing great benefits to many economies but must be managed properly by both policymakers and businesses for a sustainable future.”
In terms of sustainability and environmental issues, Europe is once again well represented, with Switzerland on top, followed by Norway and Austria. Canada claimed the top prize for its infrastructure and air traffic, ahead of the US and Australia. In terms of services offered to travellers, Portugal is top of its class, before Austria and Spain. Finally, if travellers only take a country's natural resources to choose their next trip, they can head to Mexico, Brazil and Australia.
