Delays and traffic jams are to be expected when driving over the Cambie Street Bridge this fall.
The city is starting seismic upgrades on the bridge over False Creek starting Wednesday, Aug. 25, along with new lighting.
The lighting will be put in place first, according to a press release, and will mean intermittent closures of small areas.
In early September the structural work will begin, which will affect pedestrians and cyclists significantly, as the sidewalk and cycle lane on one side will have to be closed.
"Walking and cycling access will remain in place on the non-working side of the bridge. During this early stage of work, drivers will continue to have two travel lanes in each direction," states the city in the press release.
At those times, cyclists and pedestrians will have to share their lanes.
Drivers will have to be aware of reduced speeds and lanes at times. A minimum of two lanes will be going in each direction most of the time, but at times they will be reduced to one lane.
The bridge was built before the current Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code was in place; the upgrades will bring it into compliance.
Similar upgrades on the Granville Street Bridge are due to wrap up in mid-September, states the city. At the same time construction is underway nearby along much of Broadway as construction of the new subway line begins.
