Keeping your pet groomed helps prevent overheating.

Summer is a great time to bond with your pet.

“The days are long and we can get outside — if only to the backyard,” says Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of the Regional Animal Protection Society. “But the heat is dangerous for people and animals. We’ve got a few easy steps to keep four-legged family happy and healthy.”

1. Provide plenty of water: Ensure your pets always have access to fresh, cool water. Dehydration can occur quickly, especially for those in fur coats.

2. Offer shade: If your pets spend time outside, make sure they have access to shaded areas. Direct sunlight can cause overheating. Pets with thin or light-coloured coats are also subject to sunburn.

3. Avoid the pavement: Asphalt and pavement can become extremely hot and burn your pet's paws. Walk your pets during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, and stick to grassy areas when possible.

4. Never leave pets in a car: Not even for a moment. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly, leading to heat stroke or even death.

5. Use fans and air conditioning: Keep your home cool with fans or air conditioning. If your pets are indoors, make sure they have a comfortable, cool place to rest.

6. Limit exercise: Reduce the intensity and duration of exercise during hot weather. Opt for shorter walks and avoid strenuous activities. Pay attention to your pet’s behaviour and watch for signs of overheating.

7. Provide cooling mats or wet towels: Cooling mats or wet towels can help lower your pet's body temperature. You can also use a damp cloth to gently wipe your pet's paws and fur.

8. Groom regularly: Regular grooming can help prevent overheating by removing excess fur. However, avoid shaving your pet's coat completely, as it provides protection from the sun.

9. Watch for signs of heat stroke: Be aware of symptoms such as excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect heat stroke, move your pet to a cool area, offer water, and seek veterinary attention immediately.

10. Provide access to a kiddie pool or sprinkler: Many pets enjoy cooling off in water. A shallow kiddie pool or a sprinkler can provide a fun and refreshing way for your pets to stay cool.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your pets remain safe and comfortable during the summer heat.
