Two cougar sightings were reported in Saanich over the weekend.
The University of Victoria is warning of a potential cougar sighting on campus grounds.
The first occurred on the University of Victoria campus Saturday night around 8 p.m. at Parking Lot 10 near the Phoenix Theatre.
It’s the third reported cougar sighting at UVic this year.
The university has issued a warning to trail users.
“This is the time of year when occasional cougar sightings are reported on the UVic campus,” the university said in a statement.
Anyone who spots a cougar anywhere on campus is asked to call campus security at 250-721-7599.
On Sunday, a cougar cub was spotted in South Valley Park, west of Interurban Road near Panama Flats, about 5:15 p.m., Saanich police said.
An adult cougar was believed to have been heard nearby, police said.
No other sightings were reported, and police said conservation officers have been advised.
Residents of the area are advised to be mindful of their surroundings, families and pets.
In the event of a cougar encounter, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service advises keeping the animal in front of you at all times. Running or turning your back is not advised.
If a cougar shows interest or begins following you, respond with aggression and maintain eye contact. Increase your profile by raising your hands, the service says.
