CHIPMAN, N.B. — RCMP are investigating two homicides after the bodies of two people were found inside a burned SUV in a small New Brunswick community earlier this week.
A police spokesman said the Mounties responded Monday to a report of a vehicle fire off Midland Road in Chipman, N.B., located about 80 kilometres northeast of Fredericton.
In an interview Thursday, Cpl. Hans Ouellette said that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of two people inside a white Chevrolet Equinox that had been consumed by fire.
Ouellette said there was no other information available about the victims.
“The investigators are still working to positively identify the two victims,” he said. “Given the nature of how they were found … might make it (identification) more complex.”
Ouellette wouldn’t say how police determined the deaths were homicides, citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.
“At this time there is no indication that the general public are in danger,” Ouellette said. “What’s believed is that this was a targeted and isolated incident.”
Police are asking anyone who lives near the area, or who may have been travelling through between 8 p.m. on Nov. 24 and 8 a.m. on Nov. 25 to contact them with any information, including security camera or dashboard camera footage.
