Safety alert: Canada-wide balloon recall due to 'ingestion hazard'

The toys, purchased from a popular online retailer, pose a possibly fatal risk.

Health Canada warns that a brand of reusable water balloons is being recalled because it poses an ingestion hazard.

In a recall notification issued Monday, Sept. 25, the federal health department states that a brand of Latex-Free Magnetic Re-usable Water Balloons have "small, powerful magnets" in them that children can swallow, posing potentially life-threatening health risks.

"When more than one powerful magnet is swallowed in a short period of time, the magnets can attract one another while moving through the intestines. This can cause the intestines to twist, creating blockages or tearing of the intestinal walls," notes the health alert.

The balloons come in multiple colours and quantities and have the product code: BY-MWB-1. They were manufactured in China by Yiwu Shuangxin Plastic Co. and were sold online via the popular retailer Temu Canada

The company reported that 1,357 units of the affected products were sold in Canada from April to September.

As of Sept. 16, there have been no reports of injuries from the balloons in Canada.
