Community centres, more recreational facilities set to reopen across Vancouver

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Park Board says community centres across the city are set to reopen, with programs and services focused on children, youth, seniors and food security coming first.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Park Board says community centres across the city are set to reopen, with programs and services focused on children, youth, seniors and food security coming first.

In a news release, the board says 24 community centres are reopening on Tuesday, followed by a gradual reopening of eight indoor pools, eight ice rinks and 14 fitness centres.

Certain restrictions and safety protocols remain in place in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The park board says wearing masks inside its facilities is optional but encouraged, while staff will undergo daily health screenings and complete additional training.

A limited number of people will be allowed in each fitness centre at a time, depending on capacity, and visitors may book hour-long sessions up to three days in advance.

The park board says arenas will start by reopening for permit holders, sport and team bookings, with public skating, lessons and recreational use coming later in the fall.

At pools, it says casual and lane swimmers must also book time-limited sessions online and facilities will be sanitized between groups.

Saunas and steam rooms at pools remain closed and swimming gear will not be available to rent.

Since May, the park board has reopened many outdoor facilities that were closed for the COVID-19 pandemic, including golf courses, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, skate parks, playgrounds and outdoor pools.
