Stories surrounding the tragic crane collapse in downtown Kelowna continue to surface as the community grapples with the loss of five people killed in the catastrophe.
Curtis Baszucki, an agent with Associated Property Management was in his office at 1441 St. Paul St. Monday morning, just doors down from the collapse.
"I was heading to the back parking lot to leave for a meeting when I got a long-distance phone call."
If it weren't for that phone call, Baszucki says he would have been far too close to the crane collapse, "that phone call may have saved my life."
While he was on the call, Baszucki says he heard a loud crash. When he got outside to see what happened, he saw the boom portion of the crane strewn on the ground and people looking up at what was left of the crane and pointing.
"I took a picture, and if you zoom in, you can see a person clinging to the outside of the crane. It was a crazy situation."
Baszucki says, "we lost some really good people," but he is continuing to work and keep his day-to-day as close to normal as possible.
"We can't work out of our offices, there are documents inside the building we need to do our jobs but until the evacuation order is lifted we aren't going near the area."
"My wife was very concerned, I may be still in shock. I need to stay busy to keep myself occupied, Baszucki says. "This was a Kelowna catastrophe."
