A Kelowna RCMP officer entered a not guilty plea Monday afternoon in connection to a violent wellness check on a UBCO nursing student in January 2020.
Const. Lacy Browning was charged with assault in August 2021 following a lengthly investigation after surveillance video of the incident captured national attention.
During the arraignment hearing Monday, Browning's lawyer entered the not guilty plea by video.
Browning was called to an apartment in Kelowna near UBCO to check on the wellbeing of Mona Wang, after being alerted by a concerned friend.
Wang had not been accused of a crime, but Browning handcuffed and dragged her face-first through her building. In the lobby of the building, Browning pushed Wang's head into the ground with her boot. The footage of the incident became public in June 2020 through a civil lawsuit launched by Wang months prior. That lawsuit has since been settled.
Const. Browning was placed on administrative leave shortly after the video was posted.
A date for the next pre-trial hearing will be set on Jan. 12.
