A protester who had his foot run over by a bus in Burnaby is now suing for damages.

Ronan Hannigan has filed suit in the Provincial Court of B.C., small claims court, asking for $10,000 in damages after the incident on May 15.

Hannigan was at a protest to lend support to workers who have either been fired or locked-out of the Hilton Metrotown hotel in Burnaby. Hilton let go 97 workers in a move that the UNITE HERE Local 40 union calls “mass firings.”

Weeks later, the hotel locked-out the rest of the workers as the dispute drags on.

A bus carrying a Lufthansa flight crew was stopped by the protesters and that’s when Hannigan’s foot was run over. He was taken to hospital and Burnaby RCMP announced there would be no charges related to the incident.

In the civil suit, Hannigan names the hotel, Lufthansa, Excalibur Security and Charter Bus Lines of B.C.

These claims have not been tested in court.
