Canada's largest Asian grocery store is setting its sights on Coquitlam.
T&T Supermarkets announced it is moving into a new store near the intersection of Lougheed Highway and King Edward at 1085 Woolridge St., in southwest Coquitlam.
The new Asian grocery store will be opening up in a large former home housewares store, Home Outfitters, that has been vacant for more than two years.
Close to IKEA, and what will eventually be the master-planned Fraser Mills neighbourhood, T&T has its sights set on meeting the needs of the area that has up until now been served by a large Real Canadian Superstore at 1301 Lougheed Hwy.
Its closest competition might be HMart, a Korean grocery store at 329 North Rd.
The announcement means residents in growing neighbourhoods of southwest Coquitlam and Burquitlam now have a new place to shop for Asian products including meats, dairy, produce, daily baked breads and ready-to-eat meals.
The new store is expected to open in late 2022 and will be the second location serving Coquitlam, after a long-standing store at Coquitlam Centre.
The new store, along with a new store in Calgary, will bring T&T Supermarkets' store count to 33 locations across Canada.
"The opening of four new T&T locations over the next year is a testament to T&T's thriving business, as Canadians embrace new flavours and trends, while also seeking the traditional foods and comforts of home," stated Robert Sawyer, chief operating officer for Loblaw Companies Limited, in a press release.
"We're proud of the T&T Supermarkets team for what they've been able to accomplish and look forward to supporting the business' growth in the future."
T&T Supermarkets is the largest Asian supermarket chain in Canada with stores in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario.
The opening of the new store follows the recent closing by Loblaws of The Your Independent Grocer located at 455 North Rd.
