Today the Georgia Straight wrote that Mac's has announced plans to re-brand all of its convenience stores across Canada into Circle K's. 8 are within the City of Vancouver proper.
Upon reading the news I instantly thought of a series we published over the span of a year from 2013 to 2014: photographer Jason Statler's photographs of independent mom-n-pop convenience stores for the column we called At Your Convenience. While most of us hold fond childhood memories of candy and slushee missions to this variety of corner store (which, against all odds, have miraculously survived in Vancouver), it's interesting to note that many of us folks from the last two generations also have nostalgic memories of going to Mac's. And while nobody will be shedding a tear over the corporate re-branding of a successful national chain that may have been responsible for taking out some mom-n-pops along the way, it's interesting to note that in a few months' time these stores will only exist in memory... and perhaps the odd archival photograph.
