Upscale B.C. grocery chain moving into new Kitsilano development

A development under construction in Kitsilano will a have a different tenant than originally planned.

A development under construction in Kitsilano will have a different tenant than originally planned.

Dubbed Kitsilano Block, the project is a residential building at the corner of West 4th Avenue and Macdonald Street with commercial space at street level. Originally it was announced that London Drugs would fill that space.

However, plans have changed, and a new tenant is advertised on signs and the project's website depicting the finished building.

B.C.-based upscale grocery chain Fresh St. Market will occupy the space.

Fresh Street is owned by the Georgia Main Food Group; they also own the IGA chain and recently launched Meiga, focused on Asian foods. The grocery store is a cousin of sorts to London Drugs; the brands are related through their connection to H.Y. Louie

So far there are seven Fresh St. Markets in B.C. with an eighth coming to North Vancouver soon. The Kitsilano location will be the chain's second location in Vancouver.

Fresh St. Markets is known for its focus on local and regional products as well as prepared foods and bakery section, the latter featuring its popular extra-large cookies served from a hot plate.

Currently, the images of Fresh St. Market in Kitsilano Block are only on signs at the site and on Magnum Projects website; the development's website currently shows a grocery store in the commercial space.

The Kitsilano Block will have 59 condominium units inspired by boutique hotels in Santa Monica and Malibu.
