Vancouver board game store Drexoll Games in Kitsilano is closing after the property was closed.

After more than 20 years in Kitsilano, Drexoll Games is shutting down this summer.

The longtime independent board game store has been at 2880 W 4th Ave. near Macdonald Street since 2002 but will be shutting its doors one last time on July 31, 2024.

"The sole reason for our closure is that, although we survived the pandemic and renewed our five-year lease in 2021 with enthusiasm, the building was subsequently sold," reads a note on the door.

"The new owners of our building at 2880 W 4th served us with an eviction notice under the Demolition Clause in our lease."

A demolition clause allows a landlord to terminate a lease early so that the landlord can redevelop the property, which includes the leased premises.

"It has not been a very fun plot twist," reads the note.

Real estate records online show the property was advertised as a complex with "redevelopment potential" and sold in 2023.

That said, the owners are happy to have had the time they did with Drexoll Games, noting many businesses don't pass five years.

The owners have sought other options over the last 10 months, according to the note, but nothing has turned up so far.

Signed by the founders and staff, the note thanks the community for the support and encourages last purchases at the shop.

"You can stock up now for Christmas, because when this December comes around...well...it won't be the same."
