The fallout of the Vancouver Canucks’ COVID-19 outbreak have hit, as three more games have been postponed, to go with Wednesday’s postponed game between the Canucks and Calgary Flames.
The Canucks were scheduled to hit the road and travel to Edmonton and Winnipeg for one game against the Oilers on Saturday, then two games against the Jets on Sunday and Tuesday. Those games will need to be replayed at a later date.
Initially, Adam Gaudette was the only member of the Canucks to enter the NHL’s COVID protocol due to a positive test result received on Tuesday. He went into isolation with his wife, Micaela, who shared that her husband “isn’t in great shape.”
The Canucks still took their regular morning skate on Wednesday, however, and were still expecting to play the game, until two more positive test results were received, one for a player and one for a member of the coaching staff.
Wednesday’s game was postponed but it wasn’t clear who the player was who tested positive, as the result came back after the 5pm reporting deadline. On Thursday, the player was revealed as Travis Hamonic, who skated with the team on Wednesday, potentially exposing more players and staff to the virus.
The name of the coach who entered the COVID-19 protocol was not revealed, as that is not a requirement of the NHL’s protocol.
There is a possibility that more games will need to be postponed.
“Pending test results in the coming days, it is expected that the Canucks will be able to resume their game schedule on Thursday, April 8, with a return to practice not occurring before April 6,” said the NHL in a statement.
If more positive test results come in for the Canucks players and staff, that could prolong required periods of self-isolation.
