The granddaughter of an elderly B.C. couple who lost their home of 51 years to a fire earlier this week is sending a heartfelt plea to the community for help.
Katrina Beauchamp has set up a Gofundme page for her grandparents Les and Colleen Harris who lost their Chilcotin home to an electrical fire on Dec. 1.
Beauchamp says the blaze tore through the house at 4 a.m. leaving her grandparents with little time to gather any belongings.
“Colleen was able to grab Les’s medication but other than the clothes on their backs, they are left with nothing,” she wrote on Gofundme.
The couple moved to the Chilcotin, which stretches from the Fraser River valley to the apex of the Coast Mountains, in 1968. They have shared 65 years of marriage there and all of their six children, their grand-children and great grand-children have memories wrapped up tight around the little ranch home.
The fundraiser has so far reached $14, 710, but the family is hoping to hit a total of $50,000.
Beauchamp is positive the community will step up to the challenge.
“Please help and then share [the fundraiser] to get these two wonderful and loving souls back on their feet.”
