Feeling a little patriotic this Family Day long weekend?
Vancouver Park Board is marking National Flag of Canada Day Saturday by raising the maple leaf at the highest point in the city.
The park board, together with the Canadian Club of Vancouver, is holding a celebration at Bloedel Conservatory to mark the occasion.
Everything gets under way at 11 a.m. at the Bloedel Conservatory Plaza in Queen Elizabeth Park. The festivities will include raising the flag, bag pipers, music, cake and beverages.
A number of local politicians will be on hand, including: Vancouver-Quadra MP Joyce Murray, Vancouver-Langara MLA Michael Lee, deputy mayor Sarah Kirby-Yung, park board commissioner John Coupar. Raymond Greenwood, president of the Canadian Club of Vancouver will also be in attendance.
Canada’s national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill on Feb. 15, 1965. On the same day more than three decades later, Feb. 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996.
Every year since then, the Canada’s flag is celebrated on Feb. 15.
“Our flag is a symbol that unites all Canadians and reflects the common values we hold so dear – equality, diversity and inclusion,” the park board said in a press release.
