R&B and hip hop lovers, get ready for a two-day party on the New West waterfront.

Safe & Sound Music Fest 2018 is coming to Westminster Pier Park for Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25.

Headlined by Anderson .Paak and Vince Staples, the festival plays host to a big lineup of talent, both local and international. Other performers include Alina Baraz, Sabrina Claudio, Goldlink, SonReal, Rico Nasty, Anders, LNDN DRGS, Manila Grey and So Loki.

“After a great first year with the (festival), we’re proud to return this summer to the same pristine waterfront location at Westminster Pier Park for two days of live contemporary R&B and hip hop music,” said Paul Stollen, president of Safe & Sound Entertainment, in a press release. “Being able to produce such an intimate festival experience at such an accessible location has been a dream come true.”

Stollen noted that, as a Vancouver-basic hospitality company, Safe & Sound works with many local artists, so he’s pleased to have the chance to invite them to the festival stage.

“One of the reasons why we wanted to do a two-day festival in the first place was so that we could showcase more local talent, including the SJS DJs, The Freshest, Nina Mendoza, So Loki, Angst, Sophia Denai, Kenny Gourmet and more.”

The festival is an all-ages affair (in fact, children 10 and under get in free), but those 19 and up can choose VIP tickets to give them access to an adults-only lounge. The whole site is licensed, so attendees will be able to consume alcohol throughout the festival grounds; they’ll need to get a wristband with proof of age to do so.

Organizers are adding in some extra fun to the festival this year with live art installations, stand-up comedy, ping pong and a basketball court.

“Music festivals should be more than just great music, so in our second year we have been working to introduce new and exciting elements to enhance the overall guest experience,” Stollen said.

Attendees will be treated to live painting by internationally known artists Ben Tour, Tars, Naks and Akews One – who have decades of experience in every style from street graffiti to oil on canvas. They’ll be given blank canvases and paint, and festivalgoers will be able to watch the progress of their work from start to finish.

There will also be a special stand-up comedy set on Friday by comedian Dino Archie, known for his recent appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Adam Devine’s House Party on Comedy Central.

Tickets are available for one or two days, with general admission or VIP pricing, starting at $59.99 and running up to $249.99. See safeandsoundfest.com for all the details.
