I can't help but be attracted to shiny new and novel things. Which means I'm always on the lookout for the latest wine releases and hunting down cool, lesser-known producers, obscure grapes and off-the-beaten-track regions.
So, how could I resist an invitation from BC Liquor Stores that read, “What's New from Europe?” I headed to the Park Royal outpost, itself a brand spanking new store as of May. Sleek and spacious, it boasts a tasting bar where you can try before you buy. And, for the first time in government stores, Europe has been broken into sub-sections (like Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire etc.) making it easier to locate your specific region of preference.
The tasting included recently arrived gems starting at $12 all the way to an indulgent $300. My absolute coup de coeur, money-no-object, break the bank splurge was the Côte Rôtie from Christophe Semaska. Both his 2014 Chateau de Montlys ($165.99) and 2013 La Fleur de Montlys ($300) are truly gorgeous specimens of Syrah.
Thankfully, I was brought back to reality by lots of stimulating affordable drinking, like the Quinta da Murta, Brut Nature, Bucelas DOC 2013 for $26.99 http://www.bcliquorstores.com/product/287029. I've already recommended this fantastic Portuguese sparkler, so here are some of the other everyday drinking highlights (with an irresistible treat from Alsace).
2015 Barone di Valforte, Passerina, Colli Aprutini IGT, Italy $17.99 BC Liquor Stores
Passerina is a central Italian white grape on the rise. This tasty example from the region of Abruzzo exudes apricot, chamomile and lemon zest. Though rich and textured, it's balanced by juicy acidity. Highly appropriate with fresh halibut.
2015 Giocato, Sauvignon Blanc, Primorska, Slovenia $21.99BC Liquor Stores
Ever had a wine from Slovenia? Here's your chance. The Primorska region is just across the northeastern border with Italy. While it's a treasure trove of unique indigenous grapes, this wine demonstrates the region’s aptitude for Sauvignon Blanc. Lemony and vibrant with intense green melon, guava and herb notes, the Giocato is perfect for a seasonal tomato and burrata salad.
2015 Domaine Ostertag, Muscat, Fronzholz, Alsace AOC, France $46.99BC Liquor Stores
You might be more familiar with Muscat in its sweet and frothy guise. This is one of the most delicious dry, still versions I've had in ages. Honey, peach and fig aromas lead to subtle essence of rose on the beautifully balanced and concentrated palate. Pairing with dim sum, cheese or enjoy on its own as the loveliest of apéritifs.
2016 Finca Cuarta, Mencía, Ribeira Sacra DO, Spain $19.99BC Liquor Stores
Mencía is the grape, Ribeira Sacra the region (in Spain's verdant and remote north west). Super bright summer berries and scents of bay leaf. There's an intriguing irony and granitic minerality as well as a sneaky tannic grip to this medium bodied red. Besides having personality in spades, it makes me hungry for sausages.
2014 Gérard Bertrand, Corbières AOC, France $19.99BC Liquor Stores
A new addition on our shelves from Gérard Bertrand. Blending Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, it proposes a friendly introduction to France for the uninitiated as well as a recognizable character of the country's south for die-hard fans. Relish the black licorice, lavender, fennel and dark cherry aromas. Full, with soft plush plum and smooth round tannin, it pops with black currant on finish. Hello lamb!
