Canada's new Maple Leaf flag is hoisted for the first time at a major international sports event after the women's freestyle relay team, led by 15-year-old Vancouverite Elaine Tanner, won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Nicknamed "Mighty Mouse," the four-foot-nine swimmer also won three more gold medals in individual events and two silvers. Tanner went on to win two golds and three silvers the following year at the Pan American Games, and three individual silvers and a relay bronze at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City before retiring at the age of 18.
