Gord Downie died Tuesday evening at age 53, according to a statement released by his band this morning.
He died surrounded by his family.
"No one worked harder on every part of their life than Gord. No one," it read in part.
Downie battled inoperable brain cancer and spent his final months on a national tour and working on First Nations concerns.
Tributes are pouring in for the iconic Canadian musician, including from an emotional Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson.

RIP Gord Downie. The country would be a far different place if everyone used their privilege and talents as you did. Tough day for Canada
