Every four years, Meghan Agosta has a pretty extraordinary way of celebrating her birthday.
She competes in the Olympics.
On February 12, the assistant captain of Team Canada’s women’s hockey team was feted by her teammates in PyeongChang, South Korea.

In 2006, Agosta, who is now a Vancouver police officer, celebrated her 19th birthday by scoring a hattrick in the 12-0 win over Russia at the Turin Olympics.

At least in 2006, the Russian team could be called the Russian team. Yesterday Team Canada began its quest for gold with a 5-0 win against Olympic Athletes from Russia.
That’s the name given to Russian players allowed to play after the doping scandal that saw Russia banned from competition.
The game was one day before Agosta’s birthday on February 12.

This is her fourth time competing at the Olympic Games, winning gold with the team in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. Agosta was named MVP in Vancouver in 2010 and was recently named assistant captain.
Agosta, who is originally from Ruthven, Ontario, took a break from the team in 2014 to join the Vancouver Police Department. She last worked in patrol in the southeast end of the city but was granted a year-long leave of absence, without pay, to train and compete in the Olympics. She’ll return to the force in May.
Team Canada plays Finland on Tuesdayand concludes its preliminary round in Wednesday’s game against the United States.
