A Langley fuel-supply company has been fined $200,000 for offences under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

Scamp Industries Ltd. was fined in provincial court May 21 after pleading guilty to five offenses a year ago, Environment Canada said June 11.

Those counts involved transferring petroleum products into a storage-tank system where system identification numbers weren’t visible. That’s a violation of the Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, the ministry said.

The penalty will be directed to the federal Environmental Damages Fund, the ministry said.

The charges came after enforcement officers did compliance-monitoring inspections at gas stations on federal and Indigenous land in B.C.’s south-central region.

The officers found Scamp Industries had been delivering fuel to unregistered tank systems and a number of tank systems that did not display the required identification numbers.

In January 2013, the company received a written warning for delivering fuel to a gas station in Chilliwack, which had not registered its storage-tank systems with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The regulations are designed to reduce the risk of releases of petroleum products from storage-tank systems and apply to such systems with a capacity of more than 230 litres, which contain petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and home-heating oil, or allied petroleum products.
