Vancouver park board commissioner John Coupar is seeking the mayoral nomination for the Non-Partisan Association.

The two-term commissioner announced his intentions Wednesday in front of the Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park.

The location of the announcement was connected to Coupar being a founding director of the Friends of the Bloedel Association. His biography on the park board’s website said Coupar is “well known for his successful effort to keep” the conservatory at Queen Elizabeth Park.

“Saving this landmark is something I’m incredibly proud of, and I want to bring that same passion and purpose to City Hall to ensure the future of a healthy, vibrant and financially successful city with a responsible, thoughtful and inclusive approach to the issues our city is facing today,” Coupar said in a news release

Coupar will, so far, compete against NPA Coun. Hector Bremner and Glen Chernen, a financial analyst, to become the party’s mayoral candidate. Colleen Hardwick, an urban geographer and film producer, is also interested in seeking the nomination.

The NPA will hold its mayoral nomination contest May 29 at the Hellenic Centre on Arbutus Street. Coupar is a long-time Dunbar resident and is president of Novex Delivery Solutions, a “carbon-neutral delivery service.”

The election is Oct. 20.
