As Vancouver’s rainy season is about to start, the Umbrella Shop — a third-generation family business — is preparing to close and "recharge for the next step in life: retirement."
The news was announced on social media Sept. 22. The business’ factory has shut down and it’s no longer taking in custom work or repairing umbrellas.
Stock is being liquidated and stores will close at the end of December, according to a lengthy post on the company's Facebook page.
Isadore Flader opened the first Umbrella Shop on Pender Street in 1935. The Pender Street location closed in 2000, but another Pender Street outlet opened in 2007. The store’s factory location is at 1106 West Broadway. An Umbrella Shop store had also operated on Granville Island but has since closed. An outlet in West Vancouver was open from 2004 to 2010.
The Umbrella Shop is currently run by Isadore Flader’s granddaughter Corry Flader.
“The nice thing about producing quality umbrellas is that although it’s farewell for the Umbrella Shop, it’s also not forever and it certainly isn’t Goodbye. Our designs and love will live on in the rainy streets around the world, but it started with you, Vancouver,” the Facebook post states.
