Vancouver police dogs were going through their paces this week to get ready for the 2018 Canadian Police Canine Association Trials this weekend.
Running Sept. 14 to 16, the event will bring together 40 police dog teams from across the country for the annual competition, which is being hosted in Vancouver this year.
The competing canines will include both general duty and specialized detection dogs that are trained to sniff out things like drugs and bombs. The dogs will be put through various challenges to test their skills in different venues and situations, including tracking, criminal apprehension, compound and building search, and agility.
Most of the event is closed to the public, however, a free community event is planned on Sunday, Sept. 16 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park. The public will have a chance to see the canines compete in agility, tactical obedience and the fastest dog event.
