The Vancouver Police Department hosted a Police Judo Clinic and held the closing ceremony of the four-day event on Friday, May 5 at the Vancouver Police Tactical Training Centre.
Police Judo is a recreational judo-based training program that aims to teach officers a “low-key and effective means” of taking people into custody.
Sergeant Toby Hinton of the VPD said that it’s important for younger generations to demonstrate and try ways to assert physical control without harming the other person. He said that it’s important for police officers to engage in Police Judo to ensure that they’re safe and the people they arrest are also safe when the encounter ends up in physical contact.
The event was attended by police officers, students and families of participants. Police Judo was originally started by the VPD 25 years ago and there are now four Police Judo clubs throughout B.C.
