Wondering whether your neighbourhood was hit this month by property crime?

The most recent “heat maps” posted on the Vancouver Police Department’s website show that break-ins to vehicles continue to be the most popular property crime committed across the city, with 251 incidents reported between Oct. 11 and Oct. 17.

The thefts were concentrated downtown in what police describe as the central business district, which includes the Georgia and Granville streets area and parts of Gastown and the East Hastings Street corridor.

Mount Pleasant, the south Granville Street area near Broadway and the Joyce Street corridor between East 29th Avenue and East 41st Avenue were other hotspots. Of the 251 thefts, 12 locations had two each.

Burglaries to businesses totalled 32, with the majority concentrated in Mount Pleasant and further north to parts of Chinatown and Gastown. Break-ins to homes totalled 29 and occurred across the city, although they occurred primarily downtown, with hotspots in Mount Pleasant and Strathcona.

Police recorded 23 stolen vehicle reports over the same six-day period, with the West End, Grandview-Woodland, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and Oakridge the leading neighbourhoods where the vehicles were taken.

Another map shows that police found 20 stolen vehicles across the city. But the map doesn’t indicate whether any of the 20 vehicles were some or all of the 23 stolen between Oct. 11 and Oct. 17.

Despite the number of property crimes committed, a report going before the Vancouver Police Board Thursday shows property crime decreased by 6.6 per cent when compared to the same nine-month period for last year.
