Police are reminding drivers to check their blind spots after a weekend wreck on the Coquihalla Highway caused six-figure damage to a $600,000 supercar.
BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) investigators believe the northbound McLaren sports car was passing a transport truck after leaving a construction zone near Othello Road.
“A transport truck travelling in the right lane attempted a lane change to overtake a slower-moving transport truck ahead of it and collided with the right side of the passing McLaren, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage,” BCHP Const. Mike Halskov said in a news release.
“Fortunately, there were no injuries as a result.”
The trucker told police he didn’t see the McLaren in his mirrors before changing lanes. He was issued a $109 ticket for failing to yield and docked three points.
“The mirrors on commercial vehicles are meant to alert drivers to vehicles travelling on either side of the truck-trailer combination, but there are blind spots that can catch drivers by surprise in some circumstances,” BCHP Const. Dave Vanderput said.
“The same can be said for mirrors on passenger vehicles and, while there are ways to set one’s mirrors to reduce blind spots, it is best to be alert and visually check blind spots before making turns or lane changes.”
