Maureen Webb has a lot of credits to her name. She’s a long-time film casting director, co-owner of East of Main Café, and co-founder of Project Limelight Society - a free performing arts program for young people living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the community where she and her twin sisters were raised.
Maureen serves as a perfect example of the long-lasting positive effects that reading can engender in youth and their communities. With two busy working parents, and somewhat of a troublesome nature, she preferred to slink through the hallways at school with no desire to participate. “Reading really did change my life”, she notes, “my older twin sisters bought me subscriptions to books and I became an avid reader. It changed how I perceived school … Between reading and the performing arts, it really changed my view of myself and how I felt about the world.”
Now, Maureen and her sister Donalda Weaver spend their days paying these important lessons forward through the Project Limelight Society, creating a virtuous circle of learning, friendship, curiosity, and confidence that’s bound to strengthen and invigorate Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside community for generations to come. Listen to Maureen’s heartwarming story and find out more about the books she donated.

All profits from East of Main Café go towards supporting Project Limelight. The food is great, the drinks are swell, and the cause is even better. Highly recommended.
A Good Book Drive is an annual book drive to bring stories to a new generation of readers, and support kids in need of new books. Running through the month of November, A Good Book Drive will be inspiring Vancouverites to purchase a new copy of their favorite kids’ book and deliver it to set locations throughout the city. At these drop off locations you can personalize your donation with a special bookplate, sharing the story of why that book is special to you. All books will be donated to this year’s book drive recipient, Frontier College Waiting Room Literacy Pilot Project. Share your favourite stories with A Good Book Drive on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. |
