Commercial Drive, Mount Pleasant, and the West End will each have a weekend day free of cars on their main streets later this year, to raise awareness about living without a vehicle.
"A goal related to the Car Free Festival is to create awareness about a car-free mindset and show that there is a path where we start to depend less on fossil fuels," state organizers.
The Car Free Festival will visit each popular neighbourhood later this year over three weekends in September, similar to last year.
- The first, on Sept. 9, will shut down Commercial Drive from the North Grandview Highway to 1st Avenue.
- The second, on Sept 16, will shut down Main Street from East 10th Avenue to King Edward Avenue.
- The third, on Sept. 24, will shut down Denman Street from Davie Street to Robson Street.
Each festival will run from noon to 7 p.m.
"In 2023, Car Free Vancouver Society is committed to car-free spaces that grow inclusivity and diversity, making our communities healthier and more vibrant," state organizers.
