Spring break? More like two weeks of fun! For students, that is.
Meteorological spring has already arrived in Vancouver, which means locals are getting ready to enjoy (slightly) warmer weather, blossoming blooms, and more opportunities for time outdoors.
However, spring breakers who aren't looking to travel can use the time to explore all of what the city has to offer.
From a cheap night out to birthday freebies, there's an array of budget-friendly activities to do in Vancouver. Also, Saint Patrick's Day falls on March 17, so keep an eye out for free, themed community events and parades.
Here are some ideas, split into rainy day activities and sunshine-y outings.
On days when the weather is too gloomy or wet...
- Go see a movie for cheap (you may want to go on a Tuesday)
- Grab some friends and go to a roller skating disco night
- Do some spring cleaning, from your closet to your music to your cluttered camera roll
- Attend a concert, whether its SZA or a smaller performance
- Get a treat from Milk Bar before it (and Nordstrom) closes for good
- Visit some of Vancouver's whimsical bookstores or dedicate your day to a good book at the library
- Browse and shop at some unique pop-up shops and markets
- Play with some cute animals at Vancouver's bunny and cat cafes
- Get a burger and play some arcade games at The American or go for ping-pong and Jenga at Back And Forth
- Spend an evening at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Admission is by donation from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesdays
- Visit one of the region's museums, like the Pacific Museum of Earth (for the rockhounds) where admission is by donation.
When Vancouver has bluebird skies and sunshine...
- Explore the nooks and crannies of different Vancouver neighbourhoods such as Kitsilano, Gastown, and Strathcona
- Pack a blanket, some snacks, and some fun activities (games, sketchbooks, crochet, or a good book) and sprawl at a park
- Or take your picnic basket to the beach to soak up the rays and, if you're brave enough, go for a chilly plunge
- Walk, stroll, or bike along the scenic seawall
- If running is your thing, join the Ice Cream & Donut Run Club on one of their tasty runs
- Go on a day trip with your pals
- Spot fireballs and other celestial objects in the night sky
- Try to scout out glow-in-the-dark water and take a dip
- Go on a self-guided tour of Vancouver's newest murals or of Ryan Reynolds's favourite local spots.
