A four-time winner of the Tour de France will be riding his bike in Port Moody in September.
Great Britain's Chris Froome, who won the epic three-week race around France that occurs every July in 2013, and 2015–17, is leading the Dream to Cure bikeathon on Sept. 23 that starts at Rocky Point Park.
Riders will then roll up and down the hills of Belcarra and Port Moody's north shore before returning to the park.
The event is a fundraiser for the First Cell Coalition for Cancer Survivors at Columbia University in New York where renowned oncologist Dr. Azra Raza is working to improve the early detection of cancers so they can be treated more precisely and effectively.
The ride is limited to 150 participants, who must each raise at least $1,000, in addition to their registration fee.
They’ll be able to choose from 30- or 80-km routes with supported rest stops every 25 km.
After the ride participants will be shuttled to Camp Howdy for a lunch reception, guest speakers and a chance to talk cycling with Froome, who also won the Vuelta d'Espana in 2011 and 2017 and the Giro d'Italia in 2018 as well as bronze medals in the time trial at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
In 2016, Froome famously ran up a steep section of the Mont Ventoux in Provence while leading the Tour after his path amidst a crush of spectators was blocked by a stalled motorbike and his team car couldn't reach him to deal with a mechanical issue on his bike.
Froome has battled injuries through the latter part of his career and currently rides for team Israel-Premier Tech that is partly sponsored by Canadian eCommerce shipping company, Chit Chats, which is hosting the bikeathon.
