For anyone keen to get to know the vibrant culture and delicious foods of the Philippines, an upcoming pop-up market event will be a must-visit destination.
This Modern Filipino Market, called "Magkasama" (that's "together" in Tagalog) will feature over two dozen artisans and vendors and other talent from a spectrum of Vancouver-based Filipino talent.
Organized by the owners of Vancouver's Shameless Buns Filipino food truck and friend Andrew Alojado (from the Filipino pop up restaurant group Layunin), the market aims to not only bring together businesses run by members of Vancouver's Filipino community, but also to give locals the chance to get to know more about the community.
"We decided to collaborate on this market because we have found there is a real lack of knowledge about Filipino food and culture with most non-Filipinos in Vancouver and a real disconnect in the Filipino community," said the Shameless Buns crew in an e-mail. "We also found that there are so many amazing Filipino entrepreneurs doing incredible things and what better way to showcase this than by throwing a kick ass party!"
On tap for the first-ever - and hopefully annual - Magkasama are 25 vendors offering apparel, barber demos, hand crafted goods, art displays, tattoo consultations, and more. There will be live musical and dance performances, along with DJ sets from some of the city's top Filipino DJs. And, of course, there will be Filipino inspired cocktails, Filipino inspired beer, and tons of food - including a Layunin takeover of one of Shameless Buns' signature sandwiches.
