The Thundervolt, the new rollercoaster at Vancouver's Playland, will be open to the public July 6.

The Thundervolt will be electrifying the public for the first time this weekend.

The newest addition to Vancouver's Playland will open on Saturday, July 6, the amusement park has announced.

When Thundervolt rolls out it will be Canada's fastest electric launch coaster.

Passengers will experience 1.3 G as they're launched through a tunnel before dropping down 18 metres as the coaster begins its 380-metre course. The coaster will carry 12 people at a time in three cars.

Due to the extreme nature of the ride and the safety gear needed, Playland notes on its website that certain guests won't be able to ride the coaster "due to body shape and size."

The new coaster was built by Zamperla, an Italian company that built the former Dragon Coaster that was at Playland until 2003, along with the Runaway Mine Train at Cultus Lake Adventure Park and rides at Disney World, Coney Island, and Dollywood.

The new roller coaster cost around $9 million. That's the most money invested in a ride at Playland ever.
